A viral image shared by Hillary Clinton and other top Democrats that implied President Trump took an unusual step to turn off all the lights in the White House amid protests over the death of George Floyd is an edited image from 2015, according to an Associated Press fact check.
"Elections matter," Clinton said in a Monday tweet. The tweet also showed the White House illuminated in rainbow colors after a 2015 Supreme Court decision that legalized same-sex marriage alongside an image of the White House with no exterior lights on.
Many others, including Democratic New Jersey Rep. Bill Pascrell, shared the image while claiming that Trump turned off the lights as Secret Service transported him to a basement bunker on Friday amid violent protests outside the White House.
David Axelrod, a former adviser to President Barack Obama, also shared the tweet on Monday. "Perfect symbolism. If ever the country needed the occupant of the White House to shed light, and not heat, now is the time. Sadly, the lights are out," he said.
That specific viral image shared alongside the claims was not captured during the Trump presidency, and it was edited to make the mansion look darker than it normally is, according to the Associated Press.
The original image was uploaded to the Getty Images iStock photo website on Dec. 21, 2015, though it is unclear when the photo was taken. In the photos shared on social media, it has been edited to make the portico hanging lantern and several other lights around the White House appear to be off.
The Associated Press fact check said that according to its own photos of the White House taken Sunday night, the front was "illuminated by exterior lights and the portico lantern turned on," while the interior was dark.
CNN White House reporter Kaitlan Collins and others noted on Monday that most of the White House exterior lights turn off late at night.
Clinton's tweet cited Christian Christensen, a professor of journalism studies at Stockholm University, as the source of the photo. Christensen has since deleted his tweet with the original edited photo and shared a Reuters photo that showed the White House at night with most lights off, with some light on lower levels showing.
"I posted a picture of the White House 'going dark' that appears to have been shopped. Apologies, and deleted. Doesn't change fact that it happened. So, here's a Reuters photo," Christensen said in a Monday tweet.
That rainbow picture made me vomit.
I have been told that it’s the usual practice to turn the White House lights out after about midnight.
That makes sense to me.
As long as Security is still present and moving about.
I think even Jimmy Carter would approve of that energy saving plan.
People also ask Why did they call Lyndon Johnson light bulb Lyndon? The meaning of the Lyndon Johnson nickname "Light-Bulb Lyndon" refers, was not due to amazing ideas, but to his obsession for saving electricity which led him to storm around the White House to turn off unnecessary lights.
What exactly is all this bullsh*t about lights about anyway?
"..."I posted a picture of the White House 'going dark' that appears to have been shopped. Apologies, and deleted. Doesn't change fact that it happened. So, here's a Reuters photo," Christensen said in a Monday tweet...."
....... Any way to find out if the lights were indeed turned off??? ... FYI ... many News Agencies use "Stock Photos ..." for their reports ..... Usually from laziness .....
Those scary military guys who can see in the dark do better when it’s dark.
FWIW, knowing what I know, if I had been a protester and saw the WH go dark, I would run like hell as fast and far away as I could.
If Trump did that, there would be a flood of “fact checks” saying it was fake. I wonder when Snopes and the rest will jump on this forgery. It’s okay, I’ll wait.
Some are implying the lights on indicates a
“State of Readiness”, lights off indicates, “No one in charge”. Kind of silly, but typical for Dems.
More information warfare being perpetuated against the American people by leftist (i.e. Democrat) media.
