You are right. Trump doesn’t withdraw forces, figuratively speaking, without pushing ahead somewhere else. We will know in a few days. My guess is Esper’s days are numbered.

Trump can't afford to fire anyone as major as the Sec of Defense this close to the election - Esper is new. It will have to be done after the election. Reelected presidents always make changes within days after the election.

Trump has shown he can be patient and just wait. If he fired him, it would play into the White House is in chaos and no one can work with Trump and he is this or he is that..., etc.
