Bethany College removes Robert C. Byrd's name from health center [WV]

Robert C. Byrd's name has been removed from the Bethany College Health Center.

The move was prompted by the ongoing national conversations about race relations in America.

"The last few weeks, and well before the conversations and calls for change took hold, we recognized as a campus that the name of our Robert C. Byrd Health Center created divisiveness and pain for members of Bethany community, both past and present."

According to a letter, posted on the college's website, from President Tamara Rodenberg, Ph.D., the move is "to demonstrate Bethany College’s capacity to change, to listen, and to learn."

Byrd, a late U.S. senator from West Virginia, was a member of Klu Klux Klan. He later renounced the group and apologized multiple times for his involvement.

"We respect the Byrd family name, but we can no longer let it represent how we lead in today’s world. We will honor our past, but we must propel the College into a new shared future. And so from this point forward, a new chapter begins on our campus, one informed by more diverse voices, one predicated on mutual respect and human value, and one that aims to unite through words, actions and hope," Dr. Rodenberg wrote.

Bethany College is located in West Virginia's Northern Panhandle.

And so the erasure of history begins now in West Virginia. Would love to have a sign and plaque business in the Mountain State. Literally hundreds of places in WV are named after the Grand Kleagle.

Sooner or later the floodgates of history were bound to drown all the Democrat lies.

I always said that they would only take Byrd’s name off of places only so they could put it back at a later date.

This removing of Byrd’s name will be quite expensive. Highways to outhouses carry his moniker.

Whoa! NOT enough! That building was built with racist blood money. Remove the name? No, tear that building down!

I hate to say it but Harry Truman used the “N” word in conversations as reported by his daughter. He was probably the greatest Democrat to ever hold the office of president. Sorry folks, Harry has to go, statue, pictures, tear down his library.

College health centers spend most of their time testing and treating STD’s.

Perhaps they can rename it after Bill Clinton.

Or god forbid in Minnesota where it seems like every park or building is named after Hubert Humphrey, Walter Mondale or Paul Wellstone.

That was my first thought. Isn't his name on just about everything in WVA? Removing his name from everywhere is is shown would certainly be the definition of job security.

Byrd’s name is everywhere on everything in WV. It’s pervasive. Changing/doing away with it will take a life time.

By what metaphysical process does a name cause pain?

I think one of the good things from all this is that many black people are going to realize that White Liberals have never been their friends, just as Malcolm X tried to tell them years ago.

How about renaming the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton. Wilson was the most virulent racist president in the 20th century, and possibly in the entire history of our country. Nothing in the US should bear his name.
