Road Trip: United States Coast Guard Base Alameda, California

Coast Guard Base Alameda also referred to as Coast Guard Island is an artificial island in the Oakland Estuary between Oakland and Alameda, California. It is home to several major United States Coast Guard commands and cutters, including the Coast Guard Pacific Area.

It is one of the largest Coast Guard bases on the West Coast. From 1942 until 1982, the island was the site of the Coast Guard's recruiting training center (boot camp), enlisting and training hundreds of thousands of Coasties including many of the 214,239 who served in the Pacific and European Theaters of World War II.

Established February 15, 2012, Base Alameda provides a wide variety of services in direct support of Coast Guard activities throughout the West Coast. Personnel Support includes the management of approximately 700 CG-owned Housing units, transportation of household goods, the Child Development Center (CDC), Morale, Recreation and Welfare (MWR), and personnel support services.

The Integrated Support Command provides office and work spaces for permanently based tenant commands and messing and berthing for their personnel. The Integrated Support Command is home to a variety of tenant commands including: Commander, Pacific Area; Commander, Maintenance & Logistics Command Pacific; Commander, Joint Interagency Task Force West; Marine Safety Office San Francisco Bay; Training Team One; Naval Engineering Support Unit Alameda; Electronics Support Unit Alameda; and homeport for 4 High Endurance Coast Guard Cutters: CGC SHERMAN, CGC MORGENTHAU, CGC MUNRO, and the CGC BOUTWELL.

Coast Guard Island is in the Oakland Estuary between Oakland and Alameda. The 68-acre island is situated in the historic Brooklyn Basin, now known as Embarcadero Cove. It is within the Alameda city limits, however, and only accessible via Campbell Boulevard in Oakland.

The Island supports a number of government facilities, including the Pacific Commander Station (U.S. Coast Guard District Eleven), an industrial service center, the San Francisco Marine Safety Office, a training center for reserve and enlisted coast guard personnel (class-rooms), living quarters, four 378-foot long high-endurance cutters, a medical and dental clinic, and public works facilities to service the island (i.e., sewage treatment, wastewater treatment)

Underestimating Ourselves

Bible in a Year:

Samuel said, “Although you were once small in your own eyes, did you not become the head of the tribes of Israel? The Lord anointed you king over Israel.”

1 Samuel 15:17

The young man became his team’s captain. The professional sports squad was now led by a mild-mannered kid who barely needed to shave. His first press conference was underwhelming. He kept deferring to the coach and to his teammates, and mumbled clichés about just trying to do his job. The team performed poorly that season, and by the end of it the young captain had been traded. He didn’t grasp that he’d been entrusted with the authority to lead, or maybe he never believed he could.

Due to his failures, Saul was “small in [his] own eyes” (1 Samuel 15:17)—which is a funny thing to say about a guy who’s described as being tall. He was literally head and shoulders above the rest (9:2). And yet that wasn’t how he saw himself. In fact, his actions in the chapter show him trying to win the approval of the people. He hadn’t fully grasped that God—not people—had chosen him and given him a mission.

But Saul’s mistake is a picture of every human being’s failure: we can miss that we were made in God’s image to reflect His rule, and end up misusing our authority—spreading destruction in the world. To undo this, we need to return to God: to let the Father define us by His love, to let Him fill us with the Spirit, and to let Jesus send us out into the world.

By:  Glenn Packiam Reflect & Pray

What assignment has God given you that you don’t think you have the power to do? Why is it vital to have your identity based in what God says is true?

Dear Father, give me eyes to see myself as You see me, and grant me the grace to faithfully carry out the calling You’ve entrusted to me.

Howdy, PRO.

Still roasting like we are? It was a sauna this afternoon until a batch of heavy rain came through around suppertime. I know the beans are grateful for a good drink.

I was in boot camp there in 1966. Fond memories: cussing, screaming, yelling, running, running seabags, running and then the chest thumping by Boatswains Mate 1st class Bragg while yelling sir yes sir. Biggest meanest S.O.B. on two wheels.

sigh! those were the days.
