You can pretend that masks don't work, but they do, although not perfect. You can claim that they restrict breathing, and that is true. Or you can claim it infringes on your "freedom", but that it just a rationalization.

Every time I see a person in a mask, I’m reminded that we have reverted to a 21st century version of the USSR.
In the US I can not “legally” walk around in public without a covering over my face.
Let that sink in for a minute.
And yes, we are in a pandemic. We have been for millennia.

This means that if you test positive, whether you are asymptomatic or in need of a hospital bed, you are a “case”.
And virus exposure is like radiation exposure. We are all exposed to radiation all day long. The important thing is that you don’t get exposed to levels that cause you to “have symptoms”. e.g. sunburn or death.
And asymptomatic people exhale REALLY low levels of the virus.
This whole thing is a farce. My country has gone mad.
Heck, you can believe they don’t work, and that they are a stupid restriction. BUT, if that is what it takes to be open and functioning, they don’t interfere with that, so be it.
I don’t know if the masks help COVID or not, but they help get our economy moving, however stupidly.

Rioters, protestors, and liberal idiots caused the spike in Covid.
Power hungry in some cases, and stupid in others (e.g. shutting down outdoor activities). But asymptomatic people spread the virus. That was shown in the church choir practice. No symptomatic people, large indoor space, no masks, 80 to 90% spread (depending how many had it previously). Contrast that with the beauty parlor where most people wore masks and there was no spread.

The recent mandate by the Governor for the wearing of masks/face coverings throughout the state, with more stringent restrictions for Yakima County, has again put pressure on local law enforcement. A recent media headline and article missed the mark on my enforcement position as the Yakima County sheriff, so a clarification is needed.
The Yakima County Sheriff’s Office will not be enforcing the recent face-covering order. From the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis, my position has been engagement and education over enforcement. It is a position shared by law enforcement throughout the state. Deputies will not be stopping, detaining, citing, or arresting people who are in public without a face covering. My position on enforcement has not changed since the beginning of the controversial rules from our state government.
I believe the government’s role is to suggest and persuade the people towards safe practices, not to use force to change behaviors. To do so causes a loss of trust in the government, and local law enforcement can only do our job if the people trust us. I support the individual’s right to determine the level of safety each one of us chooses, free of the threat of government intervention. I believe people will do the right thing for their family, friends, and community.
Individual liberty, even in times of crisis, is what sets our nation apart from the rest of the world. The Yakima County Sheriff’s Office has no interest in restricting the civil liberties that are enumerated in the United States Constitution.

I wear a thin disposable mask. It interferes with breathing a little bit. So I have to consciously breathe deeper.

Again, viruses are like radiation. WE are all exposed to both all the time, but it takes a high dose for it to matter.
Again, if being a “case” simply means it’s in your body somewere, how is that important. We are all a “case” for all sorts of bad juju.
Same with my governor. Almost every governor.
Compelling a rational thinking human being to wear a mask is as stupid as compelling the same to be prohibited from wearing one.
Thiinking only counts when people have the facts to think about. The facts show that masks reduce spread. The facts also show that herd imnunity will be created with or without masks. There should be a choice like you say. But the choice should be based on full knowledge.
