Chicago man fatally shot 2 teens after they asked how tall he is, police say

An Englewood man is accused of killing two teenagers last weekend after they noted how tall he was while they bought candy at a gas station in South Shore.

Laroy Battle, 19, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and possession of a controlled substance, Deputy Chief Brendan Deenihan said at a news conference Thursday.

Jasean Francis, 17, and Charles Riley, 16, were “very good kids from really excellent families,” Deenihan said. They had gone to a gas station Saturday afternoon in the 7900 block of South Luella with a third friend to buy candy when they ran into Battle.

Black on black killings have always been high in JAX and they’ve soared recently.

I’m not sure the sheriffs even patrol these places now because they want to avoid problems. Jacksonville is both a city and a county, so our police force is actually JSO, the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office, in case you’re puzzled.

The trio then walked to a nearby gas station to buy some food when they encountered Battle, who was also shopping there. One of the teens noticed Battle had a gun in his waistband and commented to him that he wished he was as tall as Battle because he wanted to play basketball.

I live in Chicago, and I’m telling you, there probably isn’t. Battle was charged with PCS, which means he was probably high already, and guns are as plentiful on the streets as heroin. If you know the right people and have a few hundred dollars, you can have a gun in your hand without much more than a text.

It’s a normal thing around here. Kids are shot every day, black on black, and nobody running things here seems to know what to do. We all know what needs to be done, but it won’t happen. God forbid anyone actually serves time for illegal weapons.

This meeting was a official meeting.
Until someone in the office actually complains and files the proper reports, nothing is going to change.
