China vows "countermeasures" as U.S. bans military exports to Hong Kong over new security law

China said Tuesday it will retaliate after the U.S. announced it was ending the export of sensitive military items to Hong Kong in response to Beijing imposing a controversial national security law on the semi-autonomous city. China's rubber-stamp parliament formally passed the sweeping law for Hong Kong on Tuesday, which critics and many western governments fear will smother the global financial hub's freedoms and hollow out its autonomy...

The State Department will end the export of all items on its controlled list to Hong Kong, which includes products ranging from advanced ammunition to military hardware that already require approval from the White House and Congress...

Last year the U.S. Congress, during the height of Hong Kong's pro-democracy unrest, passed the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act. It required Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to certify the city's autonomous status, under the Hong Kong Policy Act of 1992, every year.

At the end of May, just before the People's Congress approved the new law, he said that status could no longer be confirmed, effectively taking away the region's special trading status, which could force it to start trading with the U.S. under the much tighter regulations that apply to mainland China.

The declaration by Pompeo opened the door for the White House to scrap the special U.S. trade and economic ties with the city — with the aim of causing pain for China and Communist Party-linked entities. Washington has yet to outline the details of any punitive actions it might take in addition to the halt to the sale of the military items announced Monday.

Amazing that we ever allowed sensitive military exports into communist control.

Long overdue.

This weeks should see more new sanctions on China, for their oppression in Hong Kong.

Another big step in the great de-coupling of our economies.

Sensitive military exports are those listed for export control. Those lists have been maintained for decades.

Some are high tech, and others more mundane, like body srmor.

Body armor, completed computers over a certain performance standard, lots of tech and aerospace gear that could be used for advanced weapons construction, actual weapons, holographic and red dot sights, the export control list is quite specific and quite long. A lot of it is pretty stupid these days too as most of it is actually MADE in China if not in other countries, but there’s some categories on the list that do still make sense.

This is why when you buy a Dell computer direct from Dell in the US, you have to check a box saying you’re not going to export the computer.

Or, put another way, anything an infantryman would carry on him into the field these days, short of some of the clothes and the load bearing gear, is on that list, and is only a tiny portion of it.

This kind of moronic elitist groupthink is why the election of Trump will stand as a shining moment in American history. There is no sugarcoating groupthink that will look stupider the more time goes by.
