DNA Inherited From Neanderthals May Increase Risk of Covid-19

A stretch of DNA linked to Covid-19 was passed down from Neanderthals 60,000 years ago, according to a new study.

Scientists don’t yet know why this particular segment increases the risk of severe illness from the coronavirus. But the new findings, which were posted online on Friday and have not yet been published in a scientific journal, show how some clues to modern health stem from ancient history.

“This interbreeding effect that happened 60,000 years ago is still having an impact today,” said Joshua Akey, a geneticist at Princeton University who was not involved in the new study.

This piece of the genome, which spans six genes on Chromosome 3, has had a puzzling journey through human history, the study found. The variant is now common in Bangladesh, where 63 percent of people carry at least one copy. Across all of South Asia, almost one-third of people have inherited the segment.

This virus seems very talented and able to do just about anything

I should catch one and train it to make my bed and a cup of coffee every morning

” When modern humans expanded into Asia and Europe, they may have encountered new viruses against which Neanderthals had already evolved defenses.”

So silly.

Then why are blacks having a greater likelihood problems? They don't have any neanderthal genes. Oh I C. This is from the New York times. Which likely the opposite is true

it’s getting really silly now:

3 Jul: Deutsche Welle: Coronavirus: ‘Don’t wear deodorant,’ says Berlin’s transport company
Masks are compulsory on public transport in Germany, but not everyone seems to understand how to wear them. Now Berlin’s transport operator is taking aim at those who leave their noses exposed. Its weapon? Body odor.
Still, it’s not unusual to see people wearing masks incorrectly — usually by covering just the mouth, leaving their nose out in the open.

The BVG said it was hoping to harness the power of body odor, which can be especially potent on a packed underground train in summertime, to help offending mask-wearers change their ways. It suggested people forgo deodorant, adding cheekily: “So, now do you still want to have your nose out?”
The post has so far garnered more than 10,000 likes on Twitter and Facebook...

Well, rule number one for successful condescension is never ridicule someone for something you are guilty of yourself. The German transport company complains about people misunderstanding how masks work, but then suggests using foul smells to encourage them to wear the masks. Only problem is these masks don’t stop smells at all, so apparently the German transport company doesn’t understand how masks work either.

Actually, the N95 masks I wear do block smells, for the most part. I’m know the thin surgical ones don’t, though—had to wear one recently and it was like not wearing a mask at all.
