Teachers’ Unions Rebuff Trump Push to Reopen Schools
The Washington Free Beacon ^ | July 9, 2020 | Collin Anderson

Teachers' unions across the United States are resisting a push from the Trump administration and House Republicans to reopen schools amid the coronavirus pandemic, instead opting for remote learning that experts say presents major risks to children.

President Trump on Wednesday threatened to cut federal funding for schools that fail to reopen in the fall, echoing a recent bill proposed by Reps. Jim Banks (R., Ind.) and Tom Tiffany (R., Wisc.). Multiple states have followed suit—Florida announced Wednesday that it will require schools to hold in-person classes beginning in August, and Gov. Ralph Northam (D., Va.) in June unveiled a phased reopening plan for all public and private schools.

Many powerful teachers' unions are pushing back against the drive to reopen. In Florida, Orange County Classroom Teachers Association president Wendy Doromal called the state’s reopening order "totally irresponsible" during a Wednesday CNN appearance. In Virginia, three teachers' unions representing Fairfax County schools asked their members to choose an entirely remote learning option for the upcoming school year.

The union resistance to reopening is at odds with the American Academy of Pediatrics. The organization in June released guidelines emphasizing the need for students to attend in-person classes this fall, citing the "considerable risk of morbidity and, in some cases, mortality" associated with "lengthy time away from school." Many students coming from low-income families rely on the meals and support services they receive in school. In addition, according to the AAP, the lack of in-person classes leads to "social isolation" that drives "child and adolescent physical or sexual abuse, substance abuse, depression, and suicidal ideation."

Banks said that while teachers he’s spoken to acknowledge the necessity of in-person classes, their unions "have a different motivation."

I would. My daughter is a teacher and she does and will. Same for next door neighbor. They will take safety measures, temp, distance and lots sanitizer. Here’s something you don’t hear on TV: No one IN THE WORLD under the age of 14 has died from the virus and kids are only spreaders and consider to be weak spreaders as asymptomatic- do not “project” virus. The overwhelming t majority of those exposed to virus do not catch it, my wife was directly exposed and did not catch it. 90% of those being tested who were exposed do not have it.

It can be done safely.

If you are obese or have other co-morbidity, pulmonary , heart etc stay home

Be safe but try and not panic.

Exactly. No teachers union in Texas....the 2 teachers in my family are supposed to go back in August. The 5th grade math teacher will have classroom students and online students. If he gets sick, he will be required to do distance teaching from home. His district survey has 70% parents wanting their kids in school. For daycare. I have no idea who to believe about positive test numbers and deaths and hospital capacity. It’s all political, now 😡

A 6 week old baby died from the China flu in Texas today. If kids don’t pose a danger, why was it recommended they stay away from their grandparents?

Teachers get paid whether the schools are open or not open. It is better for their teachers that the schools not open again until at least November 5.

They are getting paid for little or no work. Cut off their pay or put them on furlough and let’s see how that affects their thinking.
School age kids have close to zero probability of dying from coronavirus even if they test positive.

You have to defund the teachers’ colleges, too, and make their previous graduates ineligible for employment in the public schools.-

My son loves teaching. He managed to still teach from home after schools closed. He will go back but is very cautious about how this will work. Masks? lol

Do you even know what a teacher makes salary wise. What an ignorant comment.

⬆️⬆️⬆️ This!!! 😀😀😀👏👏👏👏 Of course it takes some character and commitment from the parent so... but if it happened we might be able to “de-program” the brainwashes zombie kids and have actual common sense, logical thinking and ...gasp... facts being taught to our next generation.

The uncertainty over opening finally pushed my wife to agree to sending kids to private school. From the “health theater” to proven incompetence with “remote learning”, I just don’t trust they can handle any of this well. Time for small classes, reduced classroom time, and better content intended for parental assistance.

If the kids aren’t physically attending the school, I can see a reduced budget as making sense when you aren’t running the buses anywhere near as much, not to mention have kids not making a mess in the school, by not using it. Less costs = Less budget allocation.

I know teachers get paid little, but the operating costs of the school heavily depend on the children actually physically attending. Without the children physically there, the buses aren’t being used, the cafeterias don’t need to provide food, less custodial, etc.

IMHO Teachers Unions do put the interests of children first, they are all out for themselves.
