Teachers’ Unions Rebuff Trump Push to Reopen Schools
The Washington Free Beacon ^ | July 9, 2020 | Collin Anderson

Teachers' unions across the United States are resisting a push from the Trump administration and House Republicans to reopen schools amid the coronavirus pandemic, instead opting for remote learning that experts say presents major risks to children.

President Trump on Wednesday threatened to cut federal funding for schools that fail to reopen in the fall, echoing a recent bill proposed by Reps. Jim Banks (R., Ind.) and Tom Tiffany (R., Wisc.). Multiple states have followed suit—Florida announced Wednesday that it will require schools to hold in-person classes beginning in August, and Gov. Ralph Northam (D., Va.) in June unveiled a phased reopening plan for all public and private schools.

Many powerful teachers' unions are pushing back against the drive to reopen. In Florida, Orange County Classroom Teachers Association president Wendy Doromal called the state’s reopening order "totally irresponsible" during a Wednesday CNN appearance. In Virginia, three teachers' unions representing Fairfax County schools asked their members to choose an entirely remote learning option for the upcoming school year.

The union resistance to reopening is at odds with the American Academy of Pediatrics. The organization in June released guidelines emphasizing the need for students to attend in-person classes this fall, citing the "considerable risk of morbidity and, in some cases, mortality" associated with "lengthy time away from school." Many students coming from low-income families rely on the meals and support services they receive in school. In addition, according to the AAP, the lack of in-person classes leads to "social isolation" that drives "child and adolescent physical or sexual abuse, substance abuse, depression, and suicidal ideation."

Banks said that while teachers he’s spoken to acknowledge the necessity of in-person classes, their unions "have a different motivation."

It’s a tough call - open the schools and (thankfully) we won’t have to deal with this generation of America-haters (sometimes called ‘teachers’). But then they’ll be replaced, with no benefit to the country.

So, my vote is to KEEP THEM CLOSED, since that means they are under surveillence by parents during remote ‘instruction’ (or at least under the threat of such).

Kids are the VECTOR.

Normally they have very mild symptoms, if any.

So they are potentially the “super spreaders” which is why “guidance” was for them to stay away from their grandparents.

Sorry about the 6 week old but that is a total outlier.

Not opening schools is part of the liberal plan to crash the economy. If schools don’t open then it is difficult for corporate employees to return to work when they have kids at home.

“If you are obese or have other co-morbidity, pulmonary , heart etc stay home”

That sounds like most teachers.

More than a 3rd of teachers in NV are over 50 years of age.

Unerstand, they are getting paid to NOT work.

Just got my Maryland Howard county property tax bill.

Close to $7,000

To pay for teachers who don’t have to teach(work)

Great if you can get it which we cant

I don’t yet know the plans of the school I retired from and still sub at. The ones at risk are likely the teachers, not the kids. One had a heart transplant, at least three are recovering cancer patients and I think two are still undergoing treatment for cancer.

“I teach at an “alternative school”; one that is notorious for having kids sent to school sick because the parents don’t want them at home (or worse).”

Cut their funding, Mr. President. And don’t even worry about whether you have the authority to do so or not. Obama and the Supreme Court have already determined that presidents can make their own law at will.

The answer is obvious.

Just put a BLM poster in their hands and hold protest classes outside.

"Do you even know what a teacher makes salary wise. What an ignorant comment."

In small towns on the Rockies in Colorado, elementary school teachers were getting over $43,000 per year for their first year. That was before 2010.

My daughter teaches high school.
The problem they had was too many students without internet access.
So they made themselves available on the intenet for question and answer sessions.
And they offered assignments to make up low grades.
But they basically locked in the grades as they were at the time of the shutdown. They didn’t pursue teaching additional material because of the student access problem.

What organization in the world allows subordinates waaaaay down the ranks to defy the wishes of the chief executive? Time to let these a$$holes and their union know the President answers to the voters, not to them. If Trump put them all in a bus and pushed it off a cliff, I’d cheer.
