Teachers’ Unions Rebuff Trump Push to Reopen Schools
The Washington Free Beacon ^ | July 9, 2020 | Collin Anderson

Teachers' unions across the United States are resisting a push from the Trump administration and House Republicans to reopen schools amid the coronavirus pandemic, instead opting for remote learning that experts say presents major risks to children.

President Trump on Wednesday threatened to cut federal funding for schools that fail to reopen in the fall, echoing a recent bill proposed by Reps. Jim Banks (R., Ind.) and Tom Tiffany (R., Wisc.). Multiple states have followed suit—Florida announced Wednesday that it will require schools to hold in-person classes beginning in August, and Gov. Ralph Northam (D., Va.) in June unveiled a phased reopening plan for all public and private schools.

Many powerful teachers' unions are pushing back against the drive to reopen. In Florida, Orange County Classroom Teachers Association president Wendy Doromal called the state’s reopening order "totally irresponsible" during a Wednesday CNN appearance. In Virginia, three teachers' unions representing Fairfax County schools asked their members to choose an entirely remote learning option for the upcoming school year.

The union resistance to reopening is at odds with the American Academy of Pediatrics. The organization in June released guidelines emphasizing the need for students to attend in-person classes this fall, citing the "considerable risk of morbidity and, in some cases, mortality" associated with "lengthy time away from school." Many students coming from low-income families rely on the meals and support services they receive in school. In addition, according to the AAP, the lack of in-person classes leads to "social isolation" that drives "child and adolescent physical or sexual abuse, substance abuse, depression, and suicidal ideation."

Banks said that while teachers he’s spoken to acknowledge the necessity of in-person classes, their unions "have a different motivation."

States should withhold funds. If they are not in school they shouldn’t get paid

“What organization in the world allows subordinates waaaaay down the ranks to defy the wishes of the chief executive?”

POTUS has no authority over ANY teacher in the public schools.

Seems you skipped civics class.

Actually, I got an A in it.

Seems you forgot cheering wildly when your hero JFK nationalized The Guard and sent them down to Alabamy to make those racist professors, and their governor, kneel down to him.

You’re welcome for the schooling in history and civics you just got.

$46,500 starting salary for a teacher in Killeen, TX in 2017-18. Not bad for a 22-23 year old who works 9 months of the year. They can make more working summer, coaching, etc. Per capita income in Bell County, TX in 2019 was $25,911 and median household income was $54,184. Teachers don’t have it as bad as many people think. That’s without getting into the very good perks they get.

Teachers’ unions are among the most imbecilic groups around. Hell, here in Illinois they go on strike every year, and a hell of a lot of us (taxpayers) hope they stay out on strike!

“Eliminate the Department of Education.”

Possibly the worst thing Jimmy Carter ever did was to create this monstrosity.

Time to end “formal” education at 14-15...

End formal education at 14-15...take the older kids to work with parents...and the biz can set up a room for them to do online school...or apprentice

They don’t want to open schools. Then stop paying them. There are online schools already set up. Our school system is going to allow students to go with an online only option. I think they are contracting with an established program in another state. Online schools will hire teachers to help with the influx of students. It is not exactly homeschooling, but it’s close.

I read the whole article and admit to still not understanding the motivation behind this drive to not return to work.

Maybe it was just an awkward sentence but I don’t think they can force your friend / brother to work at all when actually sick. Maybe you meant if he tested + or was running some temperature he would be required to work from home. But if he were sick I assume he would be able to be sick and get well and they’d get a sub.

I have a friend who teaches at a KISD elementary school. She should get combat pay for what she has to put up with.

You do realize that when the schools were closed that the teachers were still teaching don’t you?

My children basically had half days of fake school (done by noon); the teachers didn’t get half pay (and our teachers make a ton of money).

If they weren’t being paid, they’d be clamoring to get back to their 180 days-per-year part-time jobs.

More than a 3rd of teachers in NV are over 50 years of age.

Employ young substitute teachers.

I just spoke to a friend who’s teaching fifth grade; she’s not worried about COVID. She’s worried that schools will become mob or crazy-person targets, because they’re easy victims and are letting go of their SRO’s. That’s her concern.

She’s now also being mandated to teach propaganda; the BLM and LGBTQRSTUV kind. She’s pissed, but literally cannot afford to lose her job, with a five year old autistic child at home who is also in need of extra schooling and speech therapy. She’s going to balance wherever she can, and flee the state (IL) when possible.
