Egyptian Military Convenes to Discuss Invading Libya in Potential Showdown with Turkey

The Egyptian parliament will meet on Monday to discuss President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi’s decision to send ground troops into Libya reports Aawsat.

The president, who is also the military’s chief of staff, still needs the approval of two-thirds of Cairo’s lawmakers as well as a recommendation from the national defense council before deploying military forces into combat missions on foreign soil.

Sisi led a meeting on Sunday for the council to discuss the developments taking place in Libya as part of Egyptian efforts to “maintain the current frontlines” and prevent either side from breaching those red lines. The stated objective is to keep the peace between all Libyan parties involved.

In June, Sisi categorized the cities of Sirte and Jufra as “red lines” that mustn’t be crossed. Any encroachment on these cities would compel Egypt to intervene in order to safeguard its national security, he added.

Sunday’s defense council meeting included the parliament speaker, prime minister as well as top officials from the defense and military ministry, military commanders, intelligence chief, foreign affairs minister, finance and interior ministers.

I wonder how useful it would be for the general staff to review what transpired with Rommel and then Montgomery.

As long as the US stays out of it, I can’t see any downside to Muslims killing Muslims.

“I wonder how useful it would be for the general staff to review what transpired with Rommel and then Montgomery”.

How does what transpired with Rommel and Montgomery pertain to what they are considering?

I doubt if they would need to address what happened with Montgomery and Rommel.

The only reason to “consult” Rommel and Montgomery, is to study the routes of attack/defense each side used and compare those to the current road nets of the two countries. And to adjust their operations to match their (Egypt’s) current capabilities.

“.... their (Egypt’s) current capabilities. ….”

Is to probably to have all their tanks break down at the border.

Is Turkey really this crazy? Putin has them surrounded. He owns the Crimea. He has a strong presence in Syria. He has deep connections with the Orthodox countries the Balkans who hate Turkey. He has the Turks dependent on Russian oil with that new underwater pipeline. Putin can cut the Baku-Tblisi-Ceyhan pipeline anytime he wants. He can now easily unite the Bulagarians, Serbs, Greeks, Armenians and Iran (Egypt?) into a coalition that would love nothing more than to dismember Turkey. And not only that, Erdogan is going out of his way to alienate the USA, the EU and all of NATO so he’d do whatever he’s planning on his own. What’s the game plan here? Unite with Hamas and conquer the world? It makes no sense to me. This is called Hubris pure and simple.

There’s probably little they can do to stop Egypt’s initial incursion. I suppose if I were eh Libyans, I would be looking for ways to interfere with their supply lines.

That’s an excellent point.

Patton studied the routes/roads taken in France by the Normans.

The primary tank used by the Egyptians is the Abrams, they should be quite reliable. And I believe that the Egyptians have hired US has had maintenance training teams to train their mechanics. Now, what is the composition and capability of the Libyan Army, that is a question mark for me.

I’ve talked to people who trained Egyptians and they shake their head and change the subject.

One said well they’re not like the Saudis.

Patton probably did read Rommel’s book, put it was on company and battalion level infantry tactics rather than armor tactics & operations. However, it would have given Patton an insight as to how Rommel thought of fighting.
