‘Send a message.’ Prosecutor seeks longer sentence for KY man who attacked Rand Paul
Lexington Herald Leader ^ | July 21 | BY BILL ESTEP

Federal prosecutors have renewed a push for a 21-month sentence for the man who tackled and injured U.S. Sen. Rand Paul in November 2017.

Rene Boucher deserves to spend more time behind bars because of the serious injuries Paul sustained, including six broken ribs that left him in intense pain and led to bouts of pneumonia and damage that ultimately required removing part of Paul’s lung, Assistant U.S. Attorney Bradley P. Shepard said in a memorandum filed Monday.

Shepard also argued that the initial 30-day sentence against Boucher wasn’t enough to deter other potential assaults on members of Congress.

“Aggressive rhetoric directed at our elected leaders is at a dangerously high level,” Shepard wrote. “Although this case is lacking in evidence of political motivation, it is still important, in this climate, to send a message to society as a whole that assaults and violence perpetrated against members of Congress will not be tolerated.”

Why is an elected official special with respected to sentencing. All men are created equally and when necessary prosecuted and sentenced equally.

Just my two cents...

"Why is an elected official special with respected to sentencing."

For better or worse, the argument is that an assault on an elected official is also an assault on the people who elected him and the office he holds.

Rand did get “special treatment”. The liberal “Judge” let the criminal off too easy. If he’d tackled say, Chuck Schumer, the “Judge” would have given him the max.

Can he not file a civil suit now that the criminal phase is over with?

If I’m not mistaken this attack came after Senator Paul survived the baseball park shooting.

I’m sure for a few seconds he was sure he was being murdered.

They should add another year to the sentence just for that.

Like you said if he was a Liberal Senator the attacker would have received at least 10 years in prison, even if they had to make bs up.

THe prosecutor is correct.

If I knew I would only get 30 days for blindsiding any of a large number of deserving politicians, I just might go for a few.

All men are equal, no doubt.

You didn’t address the attack on the POSITION.

To go to the extreme, what about an attack on PRESIDENT Trump, should that be treated the same as an attack on an ordinary guy walking down the street?

Your point is reflected in the fact there are separate statutes relating to attacks on public officials. Not only for the reason you stated but also because they’re more likely to be attacked than your average citizen. You know, like the Colorado House minority leader who got roughed up by a mob in Denver the other day while the police were on a stand down order

30 days for attempted murder and grevious bodily harm?
This vicious criminal should get life imprisonment at the very least.

DING-DING_DING- we have a winner. Winner, winner chicken dinner.

The real question had he tackled say Chuck the Smuck Schumer, would be why did he commit Arkansas(cide) in jail/prison.

NEWS-FLASH, The coroner (on the take) confirmed hanging by shoe-laces. wink, wink.

The original sentence was already handed down. You don’t, or shouldn’t get to sentence anybody more than once for the same crime. If you have an issue, it’s with the judge. We do not want a country where prosecutors can apply pressure to send people back to prison after their sentence was imposed and served. That is a terrible idea.

21 months? Ought to be years. Just because you use something other than a firearm doesn’t mean you’re not committing attempted murder.
