Containment of Turkey a far better strategy than confrontation

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas last week warned Turkey over its drilling in the Eastern Mediterranean. The latest Turkish project is taking place in areas Ankara considers part of its exclusive economic zone, according to the maritime demarcation it agreed with the Libyan Government of National Accord (GNA) last year. Tensions between Turkey and many other nations have reached new highs recently. Egypt, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia this month joined Greece and Cyprus in presenting a note verbale to the UN secretary-general outlining why the maritime delimitation jurisdiction agreed between Libya and Turkey should not be registered...

Turkey is perceived by certain Arab countries as an interventionist and expansionist state. The memory of Ottoman domination is haunting many Arab leaders. Arab states have many points of contention with Turkey. Beyond its intervention in Syria, Turkey has also reached Libya and is expanding in the Eastern Mediterranean. On top of that, the support Turkey has offered to Qatar following the boycott by the Anti-Terror Quartet has strained relations between them and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Nevertheless, the most important perceived danger of all is its support to the Muslim Brotherhood and the threat it poses to existing Arab governments. Istanbul under Erdogan has become a center for all dissidents from the Arab world...

Preventing a possible military conflict is necessary. Instead of looking at Turkey as the enemy, it is better to look at it as a frenemy, i.e., a foe on certain fronts and a partner on others...

On Syria, the Arab states and Turkey have a common interest in countering Bashar Assad.

Oh, yes. Let’s just try to contain Turkey. Avoid confrontation. After all, that worked well when dealing with Nazi Germany in the 1930s. So let’s give it another go.

The alternative is more of what is often referred to as endless war. I don't wish to see more of our dearest blood shed for either side, or rather any side, in a muzzie civil war.
The best part of a muzzie civil war? Everyone wins.
Turks and Russians are both our adversaries. They've been keeping each other busy, and before that were into rapprochement. US fracking and other production led to a cratering of the price of crude worldwide. The price cratered further during the Demagogic Party's economic war on America.
Best part? Whatever follows Erdogan in Turkey will be worse. These are the good old days.

How to contain Turkey:
1. Remove all NATO troops from Turkey.
2. Call a special meeting of NATO members to address Turkey’s aggressive actions.
3. Expel Turkey from NATO.
4. When Turkey once again threats a NATO member—it will once again most likely be Greece—level the Pink Palace an that portion of Ankara within 3 miles of the Pink Place.
5. Continue destroying Turkish military bases and supply depots until the air in Turkey smells like the air in Hell.
6. After Turkey surrenders unconditionally, recreate Kurdistan, Armenia and several other small nations which were gobble up by Attaturk after the end of the First World War.

Show of hands -- who wants to refight the aftermath of WWI? And, who cares what kind of loss of life they endure (or inflict) in Libya? There will be time to boot Turkey from NATO, meanwhile, Turkey needs NATO more than NATO needs Turkey -- but only just.

Agreed. But there is also Greece to consider. Turkey has been bullying Greece, both at the border and at sea. Should the EU and NATO and the United States all stand with Greece? I would hope so.

The Turkish provocations are at a level that they can be handled via diplomacy. When it stops being that minor, Erdogan will have the rug pulled out from under him. Meanwhile, his attempted alliance with Iran didn't work, and the Iranian mullahacracy is crumbling -- but has not yet crumbled.
