Who deserves a funeral? Politicians have the right to override the onerous restrictions on funerals

No one would argue that Rep. John Lewis doesn’t deserve a proper memorial. He was a civil rights icon and a long-serving member of Congress who was beloved by his colleagues. In the middle of a pandemic, however, how do we decide who gets the pomp and circumstance of a traditional burial and who has to watch their loved one go six feet under via Zoom call?

Funerals are important: they acknowledge the sanctity of life and allow friends and family to come together to grieve their loss. This reality doesn’t change based on how famous or revered an individual was to the general public: it doesn’t hurt any less to say goodbye to someone who was just a dad or just someone’s child or just a dear friend. Their lives aren’t any less significant. Yet politicians have decided that celebrity affords them the right to override the onerous restrictions on funerals that so many average Americans have been forced to accept.

Yes, Georgia is unique in that it allows anyone to have a funeral. However, the governor’s executive order prohibits gatherings of more than 50 people if social distancing cannot be maintained. Photos of Lewis’s funeral in Atlanta showed that many more than 50 people attended and that social distancing was not maintained in parts of the church, nor during the burial outside.

‘Even if social distancing is possible, the National Funeral Directors Association strongly recommends that funerals be limited to immediate family and close friends of the decedent,’ the Georgia Department of Public Health’s funeral guidance says.

At the same time, a significant number of attendees traveled from out of state to attend the funeral. 50 members of Congress, including Speaker Nancy Pelosi, attended. Mayor Muriel Bowser issued a mandatory two-week quarantine for anyone who travels to Washington

This was the clearest display of their hypocrisy and the fact that the restrictions in the face of the supposedly dread “virus” are not health-related but entirely political.

Politicians don’t have the right to impose onerous restrictions on us at all, much less over funerals.

They need to be put back into place. They are SUPPOSED to be our representatives.

We did not appoint them to be our overlords.

All animals are equal, except some animals take HCQ as a preventative while others can’t.

“No one would argue that Rep. John Lewis doesn’t deserve a proper memorial.”

He didn’t deserve a 13 day extravaganza. He did one good thing almost 60 years ago. Since then he worked tirelessly to hurt America. His home district is appalling, and the month before he died, he was celebrating the BLM riots in DC that tore down statues and burned a historic church.

He’s a low down POS in my opinion.

Politicians have the right to override the onerous restrictions on funerals

Incorrect.

What is correct is that politicians have NO RIGHT to place onerous restrictions on funerals in the first place.

John Lewis certainly merited a large funeral! However, so did several members of my two Orthodox Christian parishes who recently passed on! They also merited the traditional memorial services, memorial meals, 40-day memorials, etc. And so did we parishioners!!!!

However, due to the “covid” restrictions, NONE but John Lewis got any such thing!!! (In several cases, proper memorials are planned for after “covid” restrictions are gone.)

As for George Floyd Criminal, and his criminal family, they merited NOTHING! But they got the big funeral anyway, because of bogus “social justice”!!!!

The current restrictions seem too arbitrary and in any case are not working as designed. It might be better to switch to a two-phase approach where higher risk individuals are strongly advised to self isolate and the larger more healthy segment of society just goes into a normal mode and let the generally mild COVID they might encounter burn through.

Otherwise this is going to go on forever and morph into new Karenoramas every time grandpa blows his nose.

They are all hypocrites.

If the disease was actually virulent, like Ebola, no one would go. But it is a very weak disease, weaker for most than the flu, so they scoffed at their own rules and mourned en masse.

Yet they will arrest others for going to church.

For readers of Alinksky, we should make them adhere to their own written rules!

Fauci was unmasked by Jim Jordan, and the world saw what a hypocritical fool he is.

William Penn’s “holy experiment” has left a legacy that, even during the “lockdown” phase the Pennsylvania Governor specifically exempted reilgious organizations and services from attendance caps and percentage of occupancy limitations.

Any restrictions on the Orthodox have come from their Hierarchs, NOT the Commonwealth.

We have at least 4 families in our church waiting to be able to hold funeral services, whenever.

A friend lost her Mother back in NJ nursing home in the first CV19 onset this year. She was cremated and her service is pending. This friend was going back in two weeks from today to hold the services. Due to the NJ isolation rules and family restrictions there, she was asked to hold off until ??????? by family friends and members.
