I wish Heinlein and Asimov were alive to see private industry in space as they predicted.

Almighty ruler of the all
Whose power extends to great and small,
Who guides the stars with steadfast law,
Whose least creation fills with awe—
Oh grant Thy mercy and Thy grace
To those who venture into space.

— Robert A. Heinlein (1947)

Saturday, August 1: The astronauts will participate in an ISS farewell ceremony around 9:15 a.m. ET. Then NASA’s undocking coverage starts at 5:15 p.m. ET, ahead of the astronauts’ scheduled undocking at 7:34 p.m. ET.

Sunday, August 2: Assuming all goes well, the Crew Dragon should splash down in the Gulf of Mexico around 2:42 p.m. ET. NASA’s coverage will conclude later in the day with a news conference at 5 p.m. ET.

Yeah, guess they’ll just show the undocking today. I’ll try to post tomorrow when the landing is closer.

My father made sure that those two were required reading in his house. He still sends us kids quotes of them in emails.

The Space Force should enshrine that added verse.

I remember when I was a kid and for some reason watched TV until after The Late Late Show. When the station ended it’s broadcasting day it would do a beautiful Navy Choir acapella rendition of the Sailor’s Prayer Hymn (unsure if that is the name) that verse would belong to.

Cool that they are landing in the Gulf of Mexico.
I wonder, do they check shipping, cruise ship & airline traffic routes or just hope there's no conflict...however remote that might be?

Surely they check for hurricanes!

The Gulf is much smaller than the mighty Pacific Ocean and is surrounded by nearby cities & ports so it seems like the chance of random traffic is much greater.

Someone in the vast bureaucracy that NASA created checks everything. Whether or not it gets to the decision makers or is heeded even if it does... is unclear.

Don’t forget Jerry Pournell.
He advocated for private enterprise rockets.
