PBS Adores Democratic Wives and Hates GOP Wives

Fifty years after the Public Broadcasting Service launched, we're still seeing our taxpayer subsidies transform into Democratic donations during election years. On Aug. 4, "PBS NewsHour" hatched a love-in with Dr. Jill Biden.

Anchor Judy Woodruff hit every Joe Biden campaign talking point with partisan perfection. She began by reminding viewers of the Biden family losses, saying: "He had lost his first wife and another child. You were coming out of your own marriage. You describe how daunting it was. How did you do it?"

Then she recalled how Joe Biden's son Beau Biden died of brain cancer five years ago. The interview ended on a light note about how, in March, Jill protected her candidate from two hecklers who jumped onstage at a Los Angeles event. Woodruff joked, "So, my question is, has the Secret Service deputized you?"

The closest thing to a difficult question was still a softball. "The campaign, as I'm sure you know, is already one of the most, if not the most polarized in history. It's down and dirty," Woodruff complained. "The names that are being thrown around, President Trump has already called your husband corrupt, crazy, mentally shot, the most extreme left-wing candidate ever. This is going to be one for the history books. How do you get prepared for that? Because it is going to be personal; it is personal."

Mrs. Biden circled right back to deaths in the family: "When we made our decision, Joe and I looked at one another, and I said, 'Joe, we have been through the absolute worst thing that could happen to two people, and that is the loss of a child. ... So, Donald Trump, whatever he throws at us, we can take it.'"

Woodruff said nothing about the nasty things Biden says about Trump: how the president is a "sociopath," imposes "North Korean-style loyalty tests" and has taken "an authoritarian line of domination."

Oh, sorry! Those are things "PBS NewsHour" pundit David Brooks has said about Trump just since March, and Woodruff never objected.

This brings me back to the 1992 conventions, when Woodruff offered the same soft soap to Hillary Clinton: "How important do you think it is that Hillary Clinton not become an issue in this campaign? And I ask that because Republicans, conservatives are already saying — you know, about the articles that have already been written — 'She's very liberal. She came into this campaign being the wife of a governor with a strong set of opinions on everything, to children's rights to aid to the El Salvador rebels and so on and so on. How important is it that that not enter in, and should it enter in?"

But a month later, Woodruff took a different approach with Barbara Bush. She was pitched one hardball after another. "U.S. Treasurer Villalpando ... just said yesterday ... that Gov. Clinton is a skirt chaser ... does that have a place in this campaign?" Woodruff asked. Bush objected, rightly saying Woodruff didn't do this to the Democrats. Woodruff pressed on about how infidelity isn't a legitimate issue.

Two nights later, Woodruff was at it again with Marilyn Quayle, saying, "I still don't understand what bringing up draft dodging and some of the other points you made has to do with the election." Then-candidate Bill Clinton had said he smoked pot but "didn't inhale." Woodruff asked Quayle: "Why did you bring that up? Is drug use important in this campaign, do you think?" She also objected to how Quayle supposedly distorted Hillary Clinton's record by citing Clinton's old writings and calling her "liberal" and "radical."

Now you know why Melania Trump won't be sitting down with Judy Woodruff during this campaign.

But, but I thought that Nancy Pelosi accused Woodruff of being a GOP advocate?

During the first two years of the Trump administration, the Republicans controlled the House and the Senate. They controlled the power of the purse. The Republicans chose not to privatize PBS. The Republicans chose not to defund Planned Parenthood. The Republicans chose not to repeal Obamacare even though it was one of the few issues the party ran on. The Republicans chose not to defund the many line items in the budget that are essentially direct funding of other social justice organizations and consulting firms allied with the Democrat and routinely funneling money and manpower to the DNC and Democrat candidates. Paul Ryan and John Boehner as House Speaker, and Mitch McConnell as Senate Majority leader, rolled over even when they had the power to roll back the bloated bureaucracy and myriad of failed programs of big government.

On this forum we talk about the need to elect a Republican House and Senate. Why does anyone believe Republicans in charge of Congress will actually effect meaningful change? Every time the people have given them the legislative power over the past 30 years, they have done the bidding of the welfare state and caved to the demands of the Democrat party. Do you really believe Kevin McCarthy as House Speaker will be better than Dennis Hastert, John Boehner or Paul Ryan. We certainly know what Mitch McConnell will do with another term as Senate Majority Leader.

One more thought. What platform are Republicans running on? What does the party stand for? There hasn’t been an aggressive and meaningful GOP coordinated campaign message since 1994 when Newt Gingrich led the GOP to take control of the House of Representatives with the “Contract for America”. Since then, there has been no message, but lots of false promises and lip service.

The Democrat Party has an ideology and an agenda. Its politicians work in lock step to push this agenda every day with no holds barred. It will fight every issue, and every bill, with all the strength it can muster. What are Republicans in Congress fighting for?

I don’t disagree with your points and I share your concerns. However, in bilateral elections where either a Democrat or Republican will be elected, we have a chance to coerce the Republican to do the right thing... there is no hope with the Democrats.

If Trump loses the House and Senate, he will be impeached and removed. Game over. If he takes both, he has a chance to make good on more promises. I am voting on this basis because a Democrat take over is the end of America.

It’s either a slow plod to destruction or the foot fully on the gas pedal. I’ll take a slow plod until we get a better solution. Hitting the gas is just suicide.
