Sudan hosted the landmark Arab conference after the 1967 Mideast war where eight Arab countries approved the "three no's": no peace with Israel, no recognition of Israel and no negotiations.
In 1993, the U.S. designated Sudan a state sponsor of terrorism in part for its support of a number of anti-Israel militant groups, including Hamas and Hezbollah.
But in recent years those hostilities have softened, and both countries have expressed readiness to normalize relations.
Sky News Arabia quoted a Sudanese Foreign Ministry spokesman as saying his government looked forward to a peace agreement "based on equality and Sudanese interests."
"There is no reason to continue hostility between Sudan and Israel," the spokesman, Haidar Badawi, was quoted as saying.
"We don't deny that there are communications" with Israel, he added, saying both countries would gain much from a deal.
But Sudan's Acting Foreign Minister Omar Qama al-Din sought to distance himself from the spokesman's comments, saying in a statement the remarks were received "with astonishment." He said his ministry did not discuss the issue of ties with Israel.
A Sudanese government official told The Associated Press that deliberations between Sudanese and Israeli officials have been going on for months, with help from Egypt, the UAE and the U.S.

Normalization with Israel is not a precondition for Sudan to be removed from the US state sponsor of terror list, US Special Representative for Iran Brian Hook and State Department Spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus said ahead of US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's visit to Khartoum.
Pompeo made history before even arriving, as he flew on the first official direct flight from Israel to Sudan. He was also the first US secretary of state to visit the country since Condoleezza Rice in 2005.
Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok told Pompeo on Tuesday that his country's government was not mandated to normalize ties with Israel, its cabinet spokesman said in a statement.
The Sudanese premier said he held "direct and transparent" talks with Pompeo, including about the removal from the list.
Hamdok reaffirmed to Pompeo the importance of separating normalization of ties from a US decision on removing Sudan's designation as a state sponsor of terrorism, spokesman Faisal Saleh said.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with Sudanese leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan in February and announced that they would take steps toward normalization. Israel and Sudan have agreed to move toward forging normal relations for the first time, Israeli officials said on Monday after the leaders of the two former foes met in Uganda.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had two hours of talks with Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, head of Sudan's sovereign council, in the city of Entebbe in central Uganda.
"It was agreed to start cooperation leading to normalization of the relationship between the two countries," an Israeli statement said.
Sudan's information minister and government spokesman, Faisal Salih, told Reuters he had no information about the visit and that the cabinet had not discussed it. Officials would wait for "clarifications" on Burhan's return, Salih said in a later statement.
Burhan is the most senior figure in the first phase of a power-sharing arrangement between the military and civilian parties in Sudan that began last August, following the overthrow of long-time Islamist ruler Omar al-Bashir.

Actually, the big kahuna for a peace deal works out of the Oval Office. His reimposition of sanctions (not to mention the snuffing of Soleimani) crushed the Iranian mullahs' ability to support worldwide terror, and signaled to Obama's 57 heads of state that we were serious about this ****. The House of Saud will go along because it has to, not because it wants to, and they are aware that the US can outpump the entire Middle East with one hand tied behind its back. I'd be very surprised if OPEC involvement in the 2020 election campaign -- in favor of Biden -- doesn't emerge after the first of next year.
A smart move. Sudan’s new rulers are well aware that the Islamists are biding their time, hoping for more support from the military, before they move to regain control of government. Sudan’s new leaders obviously hope to use Israel’s vaunted intell agencies to block such a move. (For unbelievers, recall that in the last decade Israel twice knew where to attack Iranian activities operating in the Sudan.)

The Sudanese have also gotten a taste of Iranian terrorism, Chinese financial blackmail, and the benefits that accrue to neighbors (Ethiopia and Egypt) which concentrate on secular life, vs what happens in, say, Libya. Sudan's got a common border with seven other countries (used to be more, before South Sudan split away) and natural resources are metals mining and oil.

I beg to differ. Actually your first sentence “ Israel can never normalize relations with Sudan” has everything to do with what I posted and actually prompted my post. The Bible says emphatically and prophetically there will be no real peace . . . a false sense of peace during the first 3 years of the Tribulation and then the anti-Christ puts the hammer down on the Jewish people.
