Fuddruckers and Luby's owners plan for closures

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- It could be the end of the line for a Texas-based cafeteria chain known for square fish, the Lu Ann platter, and other comfort food from days gone by.

Luby's, Inc.'s board of directors announced Tuesday a plan to liquidate business assets and dissolve the company.

"We believe that moving forward with a Plan of Liquidation will maximize value for our stockholders, while also preserving the flexibility to pursue a sale of the Company should a compelling offer that delivers superior value be made," said Luby's President and CEO Christopher J. Pappas in a statement.

Luby's, which started in San Antonio in 1947, announced in June it planned to sell off all its assets and pay down debt.

No timeline on the liquidation was given Tuesday. The board's plan is subject to shareholder approval.

The plan to sell off the assets also includes the Fuddruckers restaurant chain.

Luby's has approximately 60 locations across the state.

Fuddruckers has locations in 26 states, including around 40 restaurants in Texas.

Fuddruckers used to make a decent steak sandwich that I really liked.

Stopped making them a few years back, though, and I never went back.

We really like Fuddrucker’s Elk Burger. Wonderful, but not all locations have it.

I'll miss them both (we used to have our office within walking distance of the original Fuddrucker’s) but cafeterias have been dinosaurs for years; this was inevitable.

Rockwall has a Fuddruckers/Luby’s that has a door inside that goes between them. I’ll be sorry to see them go. I’d go to Luby’s for holidays and Fuddruckers had very good hamburgers that were just too expensive.

In the late ’80s, I worked at a Fuddruckers in SE Denver.
When the bakers were making the burger buns from scratch, the place smelled awesome.

The local Fudd’s stopped discounting the “regular” burger so you only got a deal by buying the bigger burger. That and the cherry flavor was always out on the drink machines turned us off before the Wu-Flu.

Had no idea that there still were Luby’s. Didn’t they buy out Morrison’s other locations years ago? I know there’s one Morrison’s left on the Miss/Bama Gulf Coast.

They are wonderful. Pat dry pickle slices, dip in cornmeal batter, toss in breadcrumbs and then deep fry.

You can serve with a sauce or just eat them plain.

Cafeteria style restaurants especially cater to retirees, so they find their best luck where there are many. I thought Piccadilly was one of the better ones, until they left my area to be replaced by Luby’s.

But there are some really basement quality cafeterias around.

I enjoyed both of them. Plus Furr’s Cafeteria. I also still remember greasy quarter pounders at McDonalds between 1978-82 that were absolutely heavenly, and when Wendy’s slogan was “hot and juicy.”

But the Karens control our fast food too. So did their mothers and grandmothers.
