New Hampshire is usually in the political spotlight only when our "first in the nation" primary comes around every four years. However, when the rest of the country is not watching, we hold other elections as well. This includes the general election that follows in the autumn, long after all the national news outlets and their reporters have packed up and left after the winter ritual earlier in the year. In the fall New Hampshire is not seen to be as critical and hardly garners more than a passing mention of our general election results given our meager four electoral votes.
Come November, national media coverage typically focuses on the states with large numbers of electoral votes like California, New York, Texas, and Florida. They also look at swing states viewed as traditional bellwethers like Ohio and Missouri. Yet New Hampshire is not seen as a deciding state for the general presidential election even though we determined the one in 2000.
You read that correctly: New Hampshire's four electoral votes decided the Bush versus Gore election back in 2000. Hardly anyone had time to realize this with the ensuing drama that followed in the drawn out Florida recount that year as well as the Supreme Court case that went along with it. Former vice president Al Gore garnered 266 electoral college votes, and New Hampshire was the only state in the region to vote for George W. Bush.
Had Gore won New Hampshire instead of Bush, it would have brought Gore up to the magic 270 electoral votes needed to secure the election, even without Florida. When we look at that election from this perspective, about 7,000 New Hampshire voters (the margin by which Bush won) seized the presidential win from Gore.

Ayotte lost, because she fell in with McCain and the other anti-Conservatives, thereby losing support of the conservative base.
Apparently, Corky Messner and Don Boldoc both thought that Shaheen could be beat. Messner and Boldoc both ran a good Republican Senate primary campaign. Messner ending up winning 54/43. I personally supported former General Boldoc. Messner basically self funded his campaign. Boldoc was running from behind to start. Plus Trump had given his support early on to Messner.
I think Shaheen is going to be hard to beat. Obviously, she has the advantage of being incumbent. Secondly, she was a popular governor. I think people look at her as the nice grandmother image. That is what the TV ads try to portray.
The other thing is that she really has not done anything wrong, other than be a Democrat. She brings home the pork. She saves the Portsmouth Shipyard every time the Navy tries to close it. She finally got the Army Corp of Engineers to dredge Rye harbor.
As far as our two US congressional races go it appears Mowers has a shot at defeating first time incumbent Democrat congressman Pappas in district #1. However, it seems as Ann Kuster will probably be reelected in district #2. District #2 is going to be a rematch of 2 years ago between Gendron and Kuster. Again, I supported another Republican candidate over Gendron. She(Blankenbecker) came in second.
I started out liking Ayotte pretty well. Then I saw which way she was heading and I totally lost interest in her.
Just an anecdotal comment.....I have 2 friends in NH that were solidly Blue. I spoke with one a week or so ago and they are now in the Red column. NH usually is as good as it’s motto “Live Free or Die’. Let’s hope that the residents remember that for this upcoming election.
If you live in the safe places of the northeast from N.H to Maine you must be simply terrified of what is happening in big state, big city USA. If you are a independent or “leaner” to one ideology or the other you have to be feeling fairly “RED” at this point in time.
I would like to see a real conservative like Craig Benson run for US Senate.
IMHO Benson was the best governor we had in NH in the last 35 years(since I moved here). I would put recently deceased Governor Steve Merrill in second place. Dudd Gregg in third.
However, Craig is now a CEO of airPoint. He probably makes considerably more running this company with less BS than public office.

The dems in NH tried to institute a very unpopular income tax and gun control, both of which Sununu vetoed.
They also closed some voting loopholes that allowed college students the vote and Massholes who crossed the border to claim they were moving into the state within the next six months.
Now you have to actually be a resident at the time of the elections.

Granite Staters do not like the influx of xpcity refugees that bring their dem politics with them.

There was a much higher number of dems that cast votes in last weeks primary in my town than Republicans. I also see a lot more Dem signs than I do Republican candidates. I am hoping that it just because people are afraid to show their support for Trump.
It seems that all the people that have moved into NH in the last two years(at least in my town in southern NH) are Dems from states like CO and NY.
We have seen a big influx from the people exiting NYC. It is nothing for them to come here and buy a house for $250-900K depending on its location in the state.
