SHERMAN MINTON was born in Georgetown, Indiana, on October 20, 1890. He received a law degree from Indiana University in 1915, where among his classmates were future Republican Presidential candidate, Wendell L. Willkie, and future Indiana Governor, Paul V. McNutt. Minton received an additional degree from Yale University Law School in 1917 following one year of graduate study. Minton established a law practice in New Albany, Indiana, a town near his birthplace. In 1933, Minton was appointed Public Counselor to the Indiana Public Service Commission. One year later, he ran successfully for the United States Senate and levied one six-year term. In 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed Minton to the White House staff as an administrative assistant in charge of coordinating military agencies. Later that year, President Roosevelt appointed Minton to the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, where he served eight years. President Harry S. Truman nominated Minton to the Supreme Court of the United Sates on October 5, 1949. The Senate confirmed the appointment on October 12, 1949. Minton retired from the Supreme Court on October 15, 1956, after seven years of service. He died on April 9, 1965, at the age of seventy-four.

Truman and Trump have a couple things in common. The establishment didnt really like Truman all that much either.
My sense is there was less of a difference between the parties in 1956 than there is today. I’d have to check newspapers and such but I’ve not read where Democrats objected to Brennan.

Earl Warren was a RINO before the name was applied. Governor of California (1943-53) and big power in the National GOP, being Eisenhower's prime GOP opponent. Nixon, then US Senator from California, worked a Convention deal for the California Delegation to switch their votes from Warren to Eisenhower after the 1st vote. The reward to Warren was the 1st Supreme Court (SC) open position nomination which was (unfortunately) Chief Justice Fred Vinson's death (8 September 1953).
Warren was CA Attorney General but never a judge and thus gave little warning on how much of a loose cannon he was. The US Senate (48 States, 96 Senators) was R48, D47 and Wayne Morse of Oregon (I) but having switched from GOP at Eisenhower's election (in 1955 he went 'D') so the Senate was split with LBJ a powerful 'D' Minority Leader as GOP Majority Leader Taft had just died and William Knowland (CALIFORNIA) was a fill-in. So you could say that Warren had everything in his favor. Warren was confirmed (March 1954) after his recess appointment (October 1953) by acclimation.
