Also at the end of the war the Werewolf infrastructure was never fully set up. Speer takes credit for that, whether that’s true I don’t know. What is true it was never fully implemented, so some people either through resignation over losing the war or foresight didn’t do it. A LOT happened right after the war. News of the Soviets rape and pillage became widely known, as well as the Americans making Germans view and clean up corpses in the concentration camps.

That took every bit of wind right out of any hiding Nazi's sails. By Summer of 1945, the Germans came to realize several things, that even today have bearing:

1. The Russians were brutal post war.
2. Before that, the Germans were brutal to the Russians.
3. The mass killings were real.
4. The French were not as brutal as the Russians, but they very harsh to the Germans in the area they controlled.
5. The British were stern but fair.
6. The Americans were friendly and very fair. The best occupiers they could have. Many Germans moved into the American zone for that reason alone.

Some Americans, GIs as well as politicians back home, were talking about leaving after the war, and dismantling their Army. To the Germans, this appeared true, but for the wrong reasons. The combat units were quickly being withdrawn to go back Stateside and resupply/re-man for the invasion of Japan. As there was a pileup of units heading back to the Atlantic ports, a rumor spread that the US was pulling out and the Russians would occupy the rest of Germany. That struck fear in their hearts.

Some of my female neighbors, who were back then between the ages of 8-13 or so, told me and my wife about how they mothers were teaching them to look ugly and smelly so the wouldn't be raped by the Russians when the Americans left. They really thought we would.

On the other hand, Gen George Patton was made military Governor of the America sector (Bavaria), so that should have clued those in the know that the Americans BEST field commander wasn't going anywhere, and his troops would remain. It was because of fear of the German/Nazi Werewolves that he was placed as he was. HE thought it was also because he could take the fight to the Soviets, as in his eyes, they were the next enemy--not Japan, which was lost but hadn't conceded.

During his short stint as military Governor of the America sector, Patton also took a lot of heat for leaving some minor Nazis in civil service positions. As he explained it, just about every German in his zone had joined the Nazi party in order to just make a living and there were simply no other locals available for the administrative help he needed to run a good occupation.

MacArthur, of course, earns history's highest honor for transforming Japan from a enemy into an ally during his term as military Governor, but Patton might have equaled him had he lived.
