Canterbury Cathedral was evacuated on Sunday after a feared anthrax attack.
A man of Arab appearance was seen dropping white powder in one of the cathedral chapels, sparking an evacuation and the closure of the catheral.
Firefighters wearing chemical protection suits cleaned up the powder. Police say the cathedral - the spiritual home of the Church of England - will remain closed until lab tests confirmed the substance is not harmful.
Investigation
A police spokeswoman said: "The man was spotted but no citizen's arrest was made. When police arrived he could not be found. We are actively searching for him.
"We do not want to jump to any conclusions at this stage."
Paramedics were also called to the scene as a precaution.
Cordoned off
A Kent Police spokeswoman praised people for not panicking. "It was noted that no one panicked when asked to leave the cathedral - everyone has acted very sensibly," she said.
"The cathedral has been cordoned off but the city has not been brought to a standstill."
Three people are already being tested for anthrax in Britain. All were in buildings in America at the time of recent anthrax scares.
The Church in England was already attacked long before the above incident. Just read the other day that 900 Christian churches have been converted to Muslim mosques.
Agreed. God help the "swarthy-looking people" and Muslims of this country if another major terrorist attack is successfully carried out here, because lots of less-level-headed people are going to start forming vigilante posses, looking for blood.
