Thirty Journalists Reported To Be Held Hostage By Afghans
Guardian UK ^ | 10/22/2001

Thirty foreign journalists are reportedly being held hostage by Afghan tribesmen.

Reports say they entered the country and crossed over to Taliban lines where they were captured north of Kabul.

The group is believed to include British reporters.

The unconfirmed report comes from the Pakistan Observer. The Foreign Office says it has no reports of any British nationals missing in Afghanistan.

The group secretly entered Afghanistan from Uzbekistan to cover the military action by the US, the paper says.

It says they were captured by the tribesmen at Ostana village.

It says the journalists are from India, US, Britain, Germany, Russia, Bulgaria, France and West Asia.

The tribesmen are demanding one thousand dollars as ransom to release them.

A large number of journalists are covering the war from areas controlled by the Northern Alliance.

Only thirty journalists? Well, it's a start. How do we send them more?

I suppose it's a twist on the old lawyer joke now:

What do you call 30 journalists captured by the Taliban?
A good start!

Casualties of war. Too bad, so sad. If you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen.

And, can we issue press passes to Bill, Hillary, Janet Reno, and all their smarmy supporters? Or would that be considered germ warfare?

$33 per journalist? That's pretty steep.

If they're going to make unrealistically high demands like that, we know they're not serious about returning them. Somehow, we'll manage, just the same.

demanding one thousand dollars as ransom to release them.

They'll have to lower their asking price. This will be this group of Afghanis first lesson in market economics and supply and demand. Would they accept $1500 to keep them?

"Gentlemen, it's come to my attention that a break away Russian republic, Kraplacistan, is about to transfer a nuclear warhead to the United Nations in a few days. Here's the plan, we get the warhead and we hold the world ransom for, one million dollars."
