I could have sworn I heard Thompson on C-SPAN a couple of months ago announcing that he was running for reelection, despite earlier doubts and largely because of 9/11. If it is true that he changed his mind after that public announcement, I wonder what made him do it.

I haven't read the whole thread so I don't know if this was already mentioned. Three weeks ago, his 38 year old daughter died unexpectedly January 30th from complications following a heart attack.

I imagine that has a lot to do with his decision. In his announcement he said something to the effect that he just didn't have the heart to run a campaign or serve another 6 year term.

"I could have sworn I heard Thompson on C-SPAN a couple of months ago announcing that he was running for reelection, despite earlier doubts and largely because of 9/11. If it is true that he changed his mind after that public announcement, I wonder what made him do it."

By The Associated PressNASHVILLE - U.S. Sen. Fred Thompson's daughter died Wednesday at the age of 38, his office said.

Elizabeth "Betsy" Thompson Panici died at Vanderbilt University Medical Center of a "severe brain injury resulting from cardiac arrest," the senator's office said. Press secretary Harvey Valentine said Panici had been sick, but he declined to discuss details.

Thompson was in Nashville at the time of his daughter's death to be with her. He released a statement saying the family wished "to express their gratitude to friends who have kept Betsy in their prayers."

Besides her father, Panici is survived by her mother, Sarah Knestrick; husband, Ronald Panici; son, Antonio; and brothers, Dan and Tony Thompson.

Visitation was set for Friday at Woodlawn Funeral Home from 2 to 4 p.m. CST and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. CST. A funeral was planned for Saturday at Brentwood United Methodist Church at 11:30 a.m. CST. A private burial was planned at Mimosa Cemetery in Lawrenceburg.

Thompson, a Republican, has been in the Senate since 1994. Prior to that he was an actor and lawyer, and was minority counsel for the old Senate Watergate Committee in the 1970s.

Yes, aristeides, Thompson announced he would run, but that was before his 38 year old daughter died in January. I suspect his heart is broken, sounds like his spirit might be as well. Who can blame him? Remember how John Glenn thwarted him on the Fund Raising Hearings.

Here's a Thompson quote from the article:
"..."Thompson took note of some of the pitched battles between Republicans and Democrats during the hearings. "We could revisit all of those old wounds and heartaches, and throw some more stones at each other today if we choose to do so," he said. "But I'm hopeful that now we can put both of these reports before the American people and let them be judged in light of the record that they remember ... There are some pretty important things that we do agree on."

Thompson went to Washington thinking good would triumpth over evil. John Glenn showed him different.

fbi file, my friend, fbi file

hillary and bill tell Moyahan to retire in order for hillary to get his seat in the Senate.
They tell jeffords to switch.
They play lott like a fish on a line
They tell Thompson not to run for re-election.

Results, gore runs for Senate seat, hillary runs for President.
