(New York, 1-Aug SFTRNN) United Nations Sec. General Koffi Annan announced this evening that Iraqi foreign minister Tariq Azziz has accepted revised proposals for the return of U.N. weapon inspection teams to verify Iraqi claims that the country no longer has weapons of mass destruction and has no ongoing ability to research or manufacture them. Responding to Iraqi concerns over the composition of the team and possible inspection activity that might unfairly undermine the countries sovereignity and security rights, Annan had modified original proposals a number of times until final agreement was reached today. Among the key requirements Iraq demanded for return of the inspectors was: the immediate ending of restriction of sales of Iraqi petroleum; that no citizens of the United States or Great Britain be part of any team, that forty-eight hour notices be given before any inspection, and that in order to safeguard legitimate national interests, inspections will not be permitted at government sponsored healthcare, environmental or agricultural institutions or other sites deemed as sensitive to local religious populations, including islamic educational centers for children. Iraqi did agree, however, to open presidential palaces to full review for which Annan had strongly urged. "We feel this breakthrough will be the beginning of a new era of peace for the Iraqi people and will soon end the tensions felt by us all", Annan said. The inspections will begin as soon as the new teams can be fully staffed and trained with Azziz estimating that the entire matter could be concluded quickly so that the remaining sanctions could be lifted by fall of this year. that no citizens of the United States or Great Britain be part of any team, that forty-eight hour notices be given before any inspection, and that in order to safeguard legitimate national interests, inspections will not be permitted at government sponsored healthcare, environmental or agricultural institutions or other sites deemed as sensitive to local religious populations, including islamic educational centers for children. Iraqi did agree, however
So that means we are to take other countries words for it, and stay out of half thier institutions, so they could hide them where no one can look and those looking could be pro Iraqi, I dont think this is a great breakthrough.

no citizens of the United States or Great Britain be part of any team They'll have their own team and inspect anything and everything at highly inconvenient times.

I just updated the KEYWORDS: SATIRE, HUMOR
To: epluribus_2
This sounds like a last ditch effort to bolster world opinion against the US attacking Iraq. The Iraqis and the UN will complain "oh we had an agreement and those mean Americans attacked us anyway!" There will be the normal whining and outrage by these idiots. The timing of this suggests to me that we are very close to going after Saddam. What's the weather like in Baghdad in August?

I'm updating the KEYWORDs again - this is only a preview of what I expect to see in the coming days... kind of like how science fiction portends technological breakthroughs but grimmer. My Apr-1 post was to show how ludicrous a story would be that showed euro nations actually agreeing that Israel should have the right to defend itself - patently absurd in their eyes and would never happen. Today I wanted to guess how people would react to what's sure to happen - Saddam playing the U.N/EU/World and the press like a stradavarius. It's coming, and they will LAP IT UP.

Deja vu all over again. (YB)

Oops! My bad! Completely missed the satire. You got to admit, though, it sounds like something the UN would agree to.

Exactly! and I can see Colin P thinking, "Hmmm, now let's not immediately rule this out guys..."

What's the Weather like in Bagdad in August???????
The forecast I heard was winds approaching 600 miles per hour and temps approx. 5,000 degrees.
Beach front parking anyone?

United Nations Sec. General Koffi Annan announced Iraqi foreign minister Tariq Azziz has accepted revised proposals for weapon inspection teams. Among the key requirements Iraq demanded: Jessie Jackson be appointed US Ambassador; that no citizens of the United States or Great Britain be part of any team, that forty-eight hour notices be given before any inspection, and inspections will not be permitted at government sponsored healthcare, environmental or agricultural institutions or other sites deemed as sensitive to local religious populations, including islamic educational centers for children.
This was an attempt to provide hiding spaces among the population in case of attack.
Iraqi did agree, however, to open presidential palaces to full review.
This means don't bomb the palaces when going after the plants and storage facilities, Saaadaam has just finished rebuilding the after the last time.
The inspections will begin as soon as the new teams can be fully staffed and paid off by Azziz.
