Tausugs harbor grudge vs US soldiers, warns MNLF leader

ONCE US soldiers set foot on Sulu, any distinction between armed groups there will be erased, the deputy secretary general for military affairs of the Moro National Liberation Front Executive Council of 15 warned Friday.

Abuamri Taddik said thousands of Tausug were killed during the Filipino-American war, and that today's Tausug were always reminded of the number and names of the dead. He said that as a Tausug and an MNLF officer formerly active in the fight for self-determination, he knew that "the grudge is something that lives from generation to generation." Taddik also said history books would show that 1,113 Tausug were killed on Mt. Talipao, 6,000 on Bud Dahu, 38 in Gumbo, and more than 800 on Mt. Langkuwasan during the war of 1913.

Some 30,000 illegal, unlicensed firearms are believed to be in the hands of various armed groups in Sulu. These groups include the Abu Sayyaf, MNLF-(Nur) Misuari faction, MNLF Executive Council faction, armed men maintained by local politicians, even ordinary farmers, Taddik said.

He warned that a Tausug with no alliance to any armed rebel group in the area could sacrifice his life just to kill one US soldier.

"For the Tausug, even if he is not a rebel, killing just one American soldier would make him a hero," he said, adding: "If that happens, we expect that the US will retaliate, and what will happen next is unimaginable. As a Tausug, I do not wish to see my people displaced again by a war involving foreigners. The government should have considered the local culture and historical facts before allowing the presence of US troops in Sulu."

Col. Alexander Aleo, who last year hosted US Green Berets on Basilan and now heads an Army brigade on Sulu's capital Jolo, said the unlicensed firearms there were a key concern. "The majority of the people here have firearms," he said.

Many of the guns are in the hands of an Abu Sayyaf faction, which two years ago raked in millions of dollars in ransom by kidnapping 21 Western tourists and Asian workers from Malaysia's Sipadan dive resort. The bandit group used the cash to strengthen its arsenal with M-203 rocket-propelled grenades and 57mm and 90mm shoulder-fired recoilless rifles, which can blow up armored tanks, Aleo said.

Tales of how US occupation forces tried to quell Moro resistance bloodily in the early 1900s are becoming fodder for emerging opposition to a US military presence. "The wounds over the massacre of our forefathers by the American colonialists have not been healed," said Temojin Tulawie, leader of a new group opposing the Americans' arrival.

"The fighting was the fiercest I have ever seen. The Moros fought like Devils. They are absolutely fearless, and once committed to combat they count death as a mere incident."

He did use that to some effect down there. I've been trying to locate that story, but you have the gist of it.

I know of a report about a Moro captured while fighting that resisted all attempts at interrogation, impassively staring down loaded weapons and shrugging off physical abuse, who begain whimpering and crying when confronted with a weapon dipped in pigs blood.

Fanatics can be quite superstitious. When I find the stories, I'll post them as well.

The local Moros are feared by their neighbors as being wild, violent, and fearless. They have a long reputation of being incredibly brutal, amongs themselves and others, even before the introduction of Islam. Kidnapping women to serve as spouses has not been eradicated, although outright slavery has been. They think very little about killing for an offense, especially with machete like knives called 'kris'. They are known in the region as pirates, slavers, and thugs.

The Armed Forces of the Philippeans, composed mainly of the friendly, peaceful northerners, are outright terrified of them. Duty in the Sulu archipelago is dreaded and avoided. Their main concern is to stay alive, catching terrorists is a dim second.

I spent about 5 years in the Phillipines while I was active duty.

There was always a special relationship between the Moros and the Communist New peoples Army durign the long duration Civil war in the Phillipines. The Moros of this generation cut their teeth in communist style insurgency warfare with the Phillipine Army over about 40 years of the last century.

When the civil war ended, the NPA blended into the Phillipines population and is now the leading voice of the whiners who want America out of the Phillipines.

The Moros blended into the jungle and began to start their conquest of the Phillipines as an Islamic Republic.

Now, in this war, we have the marxists and the muslim insurgents aligning again. Its gonna be a long, twisted road rooting them out of there, but it can be done.

One important thing to note beforehand is that Muslims detest pork because they believe pigs are filthy animals! Some of them simply refuse to eat it, while others won't even touch pigs at all, nor any of their by-products. To them, eating or touching a pig, its meat, its blood, etc., is to be instantly barred from paradise (and those 72 virgins) and doomed to hell.

Just before World War I, there were a number of terrorist attacks on the United States forces in the Philippines by; you guessed it, Muslim extremists. So General Pershing captured 50 terrorists and had them tied to posts execution style. He then had his men bring in two pigs and slaughter them in front of the now horrified terrorists.

The soldiers then soaked their bullets in the pigs blood, and proceeded to execute 49 of the terrorists by firing squad. The soldiers then dug a big hole, dumped in the terrorist's bodies and covered them in pig blood, entrails, etc. They let the 50th man go.

And for the next forty-two years, there was not a single Muslim extremist attack anywhere in the world!

If its all true, its no wonder they are pissed. On the other hand, threats to do it again might be very effective. Given what we've seen from the religion of peace lately, I opt for the later.
