Help with Analysis of State House / Assembly Districts (CA, IN, NY)

The company I work for is going to be doing a significant amount of activist work in CA, IN, and NY.

We want to start by working in the more conservative areas of the state.

I want to rank the state house / assembly districts for CA, IN, and NY. I'd like to rank them as follows:

Ultra Conservative, Conservative, Moderate, Liberal, Ultra Liberal.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get the information to determine where to start?

Any suggestions?

80% of the assembly districts in NYC's suburbs (Long Island, Westchester, Rockland) can be considered moderate. About 90% in the city can be considered liberal. Don't ask me about upstate, although 98% of State Senators from whatever region are either RINOs or Dem Socialists. That is my unscientific survey of NY politics. More to come...

I've heard of sophisticated maps that will do this but they cost and you can do it yourself...

For example go here link for California results on the Governors race. Compute the difference in votes between Simon and Davis. For example Davis got 46.9% vs 36.3% for Simon. Throw in the Libertarian and Greens if you want.

Then do it for President and perhaps some issues. Tedious, but when you're done you'll be able to spot and rank conservative to liberal districts...

To the wise guy who Freepmailed me, I know the results I posted were for congressional district but the results are avilable for assembly/senate districts too...

In Indiana, the First (Visclosky) and 7th (Julia Carson) are hopelessly Democrat. We have really tried to take the 7th from time to time but Carson gets the voters out. Dan Burton's 5th and Mark Souder's 3rd district are probably both in the extreme conservative category, although the third has from time to time voted Democrat when the Republicans ran a drooler for the spot. Chocola republican won the 2nd last time, but this is a real toss-up district. Steve Buyer's fourth should go Republican in most elections. Baron Hill's 9th trends liberal but not by much. I am not sure whether the 6th is solidly conservative or Mike Pence is just a solid campaigner. John Hostetter's district is a real dog fight, but slightly conservative.

Just get election returns from the Secretary of State offices. They should be available down to the precinct level. Then you will need to determine what precincts are in what districts. If there are split precincts, it gets complicated. Usually that will not be the case but some gerrymanders are quite insane.

Excellent source...depending on the level of accuracy they want, they might want to cross check on the districts voting for Bush/Gore or Davis/Simon. Sometimes popular legislatures get re-elected because they have good name value and NOT because they represent the views of thier district anymore.
