No Crying He Made? (Vanity)

Posted on 12/10/2004 3:55:50 PM PST by Logophile

The traditional Christmas song "Away in a Manger" says "The cattle are lowing, the poor baby wakes/But little Lord Jesus, no crying He makes."

This has always struck me as unlikely—infants cry. But perhaps there is some theological point I have missed. Does anyone here believe that the infant Jesus did not cry?

Not only was He not hungry, He had on His footie pyjamas, which makes for one happy baby.

1. It's not a firsthand account.

2. The songwriter needed a rhyme.

3. It's not a typical child.

He didn't cry at the time the journalist was composing the song.

Those hovering angels signing and blowing the trumpets must have made the best mobile ever.

That's right, Dan Rather wasn't born yet.

The writer had no kids?

Or maybe had them and thought that Jesus being the sweetest baby wouldn't wail and keep his poor parents up all night going...

Is he hungry?

But we just fed him.

Maybe he's wet?

No the diaper is dry.

Maybe he has a fever. Does he feel a little warm to you?

Maybe he is too cold.

Oh I hope he is not sick...

Until five minutes before dawn when the little darling will give a belch that rattles the windows and promptly go to sleep. Leaving the parents to face the new day with no sleep....

But that is just a guess.

How ever does one get below a 10 when we're talking about such a simple concept as poetic license?

Is someone saving these treatises for later publication on FR? Once there are enough of them, a thread containing them all can be posted and a vote taken for the most __________ (enter your pejorative here).

johniegrad had a great idea.....collecting them all, lighting 'em off, and holding a "bonfire of the vanities" party. I'll bring marshmallows.

***But perhaps there is some theological point I have missed.***

IF you can find it in the Scriptures then there is a theological point.

If not then it's just some man's idea.
