German theologian urges bishops to disobey pope (Hans Küng)

BERLIN German theologian Hans Kueng is urging bishops to disobey the pope and push for reforms in the Roman Catholic Church.

The 82-year-old former colleague and friend of Pope Benedict XVI says the church is in its deepest crisis since the Protestant Reformation after recent revelations of sexual abuse by clergy and the ensuing erosion of trust.

Kueng, a veteran of the Second Vatican Council, says in an editorial in daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung that bishops should call for a new synod to discuss reforms.

He says it is legitimate for bishops to pressure Roman authorities if the pope blocks their efforts. The bishops should not be "actors without voice or rights."

The editorial also appeared in the New York Times and La Repubblica.

I didn't see an editorial in the NYSlimes (Hell's Bible, per Fr. Z). But it was in the NY Review of Books here.

The Bible says that God’s judgment start first “in the house of God”. Houses of worship both Catholic and Protestant are going to undergo a purging from time to time and separations of sheeps from goats.

The Church as a whole(catholic, orthodox and protestant believers) needs to go back to its leading edge roots like say circa AD 75 to 200 AD. Persecution on a world wide scale may very well help do that when the common Christian’s help came from the Holy Spirit and from brothers and sisters in the faith!

They were friends and colleagues at University of Tübingen 40-50 years ago. Kung went liberal and Ratzinger became more conservative.

Sir,

Did you just roll into Dodge on a hay wagon?

Hans Kung, if nothing else understands doctrine. He doesn’t agree with some of it but he understands it rest assured.

Why would the scandal make the bishops press for reforms against the will of the Pope when it’s the bishops who caused the scandal by their failure to do their job and the Pope who’s trying to get them to clean up their act?

Kueng’s piece reproduced at the NYRB blog is amazing, by the way. He lives in his own factual reality. Is there anyone who takes the man seriously?

A few "progressives' and Episcopalians I can name. Otherwise, no. Not among Catholics.

Let me guess, you are probably another one of those who’ll bend over backwards to defend this very fallible Pope no matter what the circumstances and who’ll see no evil and hear no evil when it comes to some very serious issues.

Bingo! They want to push back at the very man who is trying to root out the evil among them.

Continue to pray for B16!

Um........hasn't disobedience to the Pope been normal procedure for about 40 years now? That aint news.

It would be news if they suddenly started obeying him.

Kung's fame clock is at 14 minutes and 58 seconds.

Expect to see much more of this in the next few years before it subsides. The problem for Kueng is that he and his kind are nearing the end of life and have little or nothing to show for their lives of dissent. They have not been successful in fomenting a revolution within the church and so they are having their last meaningless effort . Their activity will be quickly forgotten and relegated to the dustbins of history. The Episcopalian church is the safety valve for Catholicism and so any dissent is shunted there. See, Vickey Jean and his friends are good for something.

You guessed wrong, I will not comment on your personal attacks on what your views are regarding me.

My concern is with someone within the Church itself, who call on rebellion against the Doctrine of the Faith.

I stand by my comments.

Hans Kung apparently fancies himself an infallible arbiter and inventor of doctrine.

Then he must know that Doctrine is not going to be tampered with from Bishops or the Pope.
