Pope Francis' role as a priest more than 30 years ago during Argentina's 'dirty war' comes into question as he assumes the leadership of the Catholic Church.
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina – It's beyond dispute that Jorge Mario Bergoglio, like most other Argentines, failed to openly confront the 1976-1983 military junta as it kidnapped and killed thousands of people in a "dirty war" to eliminate leftist opponents.
But human rights activists differ on how much responsibility Pope Francis personally bears for the Argentine church's dark history of supporting the murderous dictatorship.

He sounds pretty real world to me. I am not Catholic and will not be. But if he is an earthy Christian leader, I am cetainly supportive.
The Catholic Church leaders in several Central/South American countries for a long time have been leftist. There was a time in Nicaragua if you asked the quesion “where is the Catholic Church” the reply was “No one but the Communist go to the Catholic Church (Liberation Theology branch).”
Now understand that a lot of my Catholic friends (some family) are “Conservative” in every sense of the word.

My experience has been that most practicing Catholics are conservative.
Although you have many nutjobs that claim to be christians, if they are not Catholic they don't get assigned to any affiliation, nor do they generally claim one. They are just agnostics that like the trappings of Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and a church wedding. However, when these same people were baptised Catholic, they decide to continue claiming they are Catholic, while simultaneously denouncing the Church for its fundamental beliefs, "And they are authorities about it, because they are Catholic."

We are Baptist, but have some family who are Catholic. Baptists do not claim roots in the Catholic Church. Valid disclaimerm which cannot be proven or proven false.

Popes have done far worse than Pope Francis is now accused of. So it is possible that he is guilty, and Catholics should not dismiss any allegations out of hand, like they often did in the sex abuse crisis. This applies even if the accuser is leftist, or is reported in a newspaper which does not respect Catholic teachings (this is still an ad hominem fallacy, since they should address the content of what is published and not the author or newspaper).
That being said, this article left me unconvinced that Pope Francis is guilty. The most damning thing which they saved for last appeared very weak to me. Maybe I am still missing something, but for now, I am unconvinced he did anything wrong.
Absolutely true. My Baptist family who have lived in Argentina for 70 years have been tormented and abused by the Catholic church and the Argentine government.
I wasn't insulting non-Catholics. My point was that if you have someone who was raised in the Baptist faith, but then becomes agnostic, they don't generally continue calling themselves Baptists. Further, they don't act like they are speaking for the Baptist church, and the media doesn't poll them as Baptists.
Much like secular Jews still call themselves Jews, there is a tendency for secular Catholics to continue calling themselves Catholics. I don't see that much with protestants.
