Doomsday preacher Harold Camping dies at 92

Harold Camping, the California preacher who used his evangelical radio ministry and thousands of billboards to broadcast the end of the world and then gave up public prophecy when his date-specific doomsdays did not come to pass, has died at age 92.

Family Radio Network marketing manager Nina Romero said Harold Camping, a retired civil engineer who built a worldwide following for the nonprofit, Oakland-based ministry he founded in 1958, died at his home on Sunday. She said he had been hospitalized after falling.

Camping's most widely spread prediction was that the Rapture would happen on May 21, 2011. His independent Christian media empire spent millions of dollars -- some of it from donations made by followers who quit their jobs and sold all their possessions-- to spread the word on more than 5,000 billboards and 20 RVs plastered with the Judgment Day message.

When I first committed my life to Christ over 30 years ago, I listened to Christian Radio non-stop.Some of the programs were helpful to me, and some were not, but none of them caused me to actually feel CREEPY except Harold Camping’s program called “Family Radio”. He was positively ABUSIVE to the poor souls who called his program looking for answers from the Bible.

Even as a “baby Christian”, I knew there was something seriously wrong about that guy.

He will have a lot to answer for, I am afraid. We are ALL sinners, but causing people to stumble when they are honestly seeking the Lord is particularly egregious, in my very humble opinion.

Plus also trying to stir up worry about the “end times” when Jesus was very, very clear that ONLY His Father KNOWS when it will happen.

Indeed.

Anybody setting dates should set off alarms immediately.

The bad part is that before coming to FR, I used to think that there were a significant number of Protestants who thought as he did.

Glad to see after these years to find that the proportion is actually much smaller.

It is very small.

But, just like another group, which is barely 3% of the total population, those tiny little proportions can cause a LOT of damage.

He’s not the first to profit off of the Apocalypse and he won’t be the last.

I listen to Family Radio because it’s the only Christian program on the radio that has decent music.

I don,t believe he deceived any one, he only deceived himself.

People just follow the ones they want to believe.
