The old Stav system. An old martial art system using staff with the stances of the younger futhark runes.

I ran across this video that combines several of my unusual interests and self-defense has been a recurring subject lately.

Debated putting it in the Religion category but the practice has a religious source; if it were a documentary on Shaolin KungFu it would be properly have a heading of Buddhism, and this martial art has it's origins in Nordic religion, and that sets it apart, so I went for that category.

I enjoy sharing and being educated on all aspects of old Nordic culture; check out my ever-under-construction profile for iconic Northern images that inspire or give me joy...TY :)

I haven’t watched it all either, but I remember it being in a MA catalog years ago. Love a freebie :)

Your interest is commendable, and I say that as someone who used to work with the martial arts for many years. Too damaged now to properly practice the forms and stances, unfortunately.

The video is terrible and drops out constantly, akin to watching an old 480x300 .mov video on a modern machine with age having degraded the file, the narration sounds like a boring history lesson and is not what I would call an “instructional” martial arts lesson, and the moves, stances, and “runes” are not explained at least to the point where one could understand how they relate to the martial arts in any way.

Or at least, that was what I was able to pick up in the first eleven minutes of it dragging on, when they finally began to show some basic strikes and blocks. Watching some guy standing there while the narration goes on for several minutes is not what I would consider informative, moves-wise.

Not a personal attack, by the way.

I think there are better and more instructional vids already on ute-oob about the staff (and the bo) even though they are primarily from the far eastern perspective, but you can try with the keyword of choice to look some up and I think you will find them much more informative and easy to understand.

Thanks for the effort.

Cheers.

No problem. As a PNW native I’m used to processing a ton of gravel seeking a tiny bit of shiny metal.

I spent the teen years in San Jose and spent a lot of time with many different martial arts. Did some teaching, as well, but never got into it professionally.

Try this vid -it’s a bit more informative:

Few may be interested in the subjects fascinating to me, so I’ll post subjects that share this thread’s search terms here.

Early this morning I ran into this discussion from Northern Radio archived on YouTube: “Understanding Odin”. Extremely learned guest and very much a freeflow of ideas and knowledge rather than conclusions. I’ll be listening to it several times at least; so much to soak in. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ISjRk6_XV8o
