What Did the First Living Cell Eat?
Creation Moments Radio Transcripts ^ | 08/18/16 | Creation Moments, et. al

Colossians 1:16 "For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:"

Not long ago, I was talking with another creationist about the impossibility of the first living cell coming into being through natural causes from non-living chemicals. I asked him, "Even if such a thing were possible, what would the first living cell eat?" Without missing a beat, my friend said: "Cellery?"

The two of us shared a good laugh together, but I can assure you that the origin of life is no laughing matter to evolutionists. Many evolutionists, in fact, prefer to sidestep the issue completely, asserting that evolution deals only with the origin of different species after that first living cell has somehow come into being.

But have you ever stopped to think about how that first living cell could have survived for even a millisecond? Unless its environment was perfectly suited to sustain that cell's life, it would have died in an instant. Unless the cell had necessary nutrients, it would likewise quickly perish. And unless it had the means to reproduce itself, that first living cell would be the last. Or, perhaps, hundreds of millions of years later, the second living cell would ooze out of a primordial soup of non-living chemicals … and once again die a millisecond later!

No, as the great scientist Louis Pasteur demonstrated in 1859, life comes only from life. Pasteur confirmed what the Bible tells us – that life on Earth came from the living God.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for continuing to frustrate scientists who believe that life could have come about through natural causes. Reveal to them that life was created by Your Son. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

The article seems to be referring to the simplest (yet still extremely complex) form of physical life, βίος (bios), from which we get "biology." But imagine how much higher, even unapproachable, of an evolution of abstract thinking and awareness, the faculty of possessing a soul life, נפשׁ (nephesh, Hebrew), the ψυχή (psuchē, Greek), from which we get psychology.

In comparison to these, by no means can there ever obtain by evolution an entrance unto union with the Eternal God, who is Spirit, and only they that are alive in the spirit may by grace attain, the life in the Spirit, the רוּח (rûach, Hebrew) or πνεῦμα (pneuma, Gree), of which is the theological study of pneumatology.

Hail to Thee, Lord Jesus, Creator of time, matter, life, and love! No thing or person is like unto Thee, Creator and Father of Lights and Liberty!

May we, redeemed or damned, never forget Thy Presence, not for one second of all Eternity!

For anyone on this thread that is actually interested in how current science is addressing this problem I would recommend the excellent book by Addy Pross, “What Is Life”. In a nutshell he lays out the current view that what we define as life is simply the inevitable result of a very specific kind of chemistry called systems chemistry. This branch deals with the evolution of naturally replicating molecules. The replication process requires energy for catalysis to occur. The molecules mutually interacted with other replicating molecules in catalytic reactions that produce copies of the original molecules. These chains are analogous to the metabolic processes that living cells use to extract energy from the environment. Over billions of years the molecules competed for energy and errors in the replication process produced mutations that allowed one molecular population to out replicate the others. This is natural selection at the molecular level. Replicative chemistry is the bridge between physical chemistry and biology. Replication and metabolism both evolved in parallel as populations of molecules became more enduring and stable.

“The second living cell?”

LOL! You win!

Minerals. Same stuff that’s in plant food.

I know of no scientist who credibly claims to have invested inanimate matter with life. Personally, I do not see any way that life can be created from non-life.

That is, however, a different subject than what the first cell ate... ;-P

The first cell was created by GOD, so I’m confident the cell had everything it needed to create humanity; in GOD’s image.

This branch deals with the evolution of naturally replicating molecules.

None of which we can replicate!

People forget where the food chain starts, because they don’t look at the ingredients on their Miracle-Gro.

One single living cell is about as complicated as a modern jet aircraft.

All that just spontaneously appeared from some mud.

Same place everything else came from. But it answers the question of what the first living thing could "eat".

Photosynthesis works for that, too -- green plants don't need to eat other plants -- but that probably came about later. The biochemistry is much more complex.

Why don’t you enlighten me as to the derivative speculation that I am living off of? Sounds like a load of BS to me.

And BTW, I’m not actually taking a position in the Cre/Evo debate I’m just pointing out that we know that microbes exist that do not live off of organic matter and also have reason to believe that the basic building blocks were available on the primordial earth. Fallacious arguments are not going to change anyone’s mind.

The original work on the replication of the RNA chain was done by Sol Spiegelman in 1965. Later work by Sumpter and Luce and showed that even with just the base nucleotides present in the solution RNA replication could also be induced using a catalytic enzyme to produce replicating molecules. The chemistry of replicating molecules is used by industry every day.

Methane is just a carbon atom with four hydrogen atoms attached to it. It is believed that Jupiter’s moon Titan has oceans of liquid methane.
