The writings of the Holy Apostle John were written during his exile at Patmos Island. John of Patmos (also called John the Revelator, John the Divine or John the Theologian; Greek: Ἰωάννης ὁ Θεολόγος) is the name given to the author of the Book of Revelation, the apocalyptic text forming the final chapter of the New Testament. The text of Revelation states that the author is called John and that he lives on the Greek island of Patmos, where, by some, he is considered to be in exile as a result of anti-Christian persecution under the Roman emperor Domitian.

Who is the first historical figure to mention it? When does the first written copy of it appear?
Those would be your first two clues as to it's age.

Doesn’t matter...What does matter is that none of the events in Revelation have taken place yet..Had Revelation take place you wouldn’t be here to write about it because the earth vanished about a thousand years ago...

Hitchcock wrote his thesis on the date of Revelation ... he defends the traditional date of 95 AD, which the vast majority of scholars support.

People want a pre 70 AD date because they want it to be a commentary on Nero and the Roman Empire. If it was written after 70AD it would mean the temple mentioned in Revelation could not be Herrod’s Temple and thus must be a prophetic account.

WHEN WAS REVELATION WRITTEN?
90s.
The preterist interpretation of John's apocalypse requires an early date. It takes a lot of special pleading and weird interpretation to get there. Unconvincing.

Over 130 authors, from different theological persuasions, have been identified as holding to a pre-AD 70 date Logical fallacy of Appeal to Authority.
We see this as "settled science" too.

The date John penned this book is really irrelevant. John states that he was taken in ‘spirit’ to the Lord’s Day... John is shown ancient history all the way to the eternity. The Lord’s Day does not begin until Christ returns for a harvest.

Many Christians understand the book to have been written around AD 95/96What % is 'many'?
I'd say that MOST have no clue at all; other than John was still alive to write it!
