As Church Shifts, a Cardinal Welcomes Gays; They Embrace a ‘Miracle’

NEWARK — The word “pilgrimage” usually evokes visions of far-off, exotic places, but for some 100 gay and lesbian Catholics and their families, a pilgrimage to the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart here on a recent Sunday was more like a homecoming.

The doors to the cathedral were opened to them, and they were welcomed personally by the leader of the Archdiocese of Newark, Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin. They were seated on folding chairs at the cathedral’s center, in front of the altar in the towering sanctuary, under the blue-tinted glow of stained glass.

“I am Joseph, your brother,” Cardinal Tobin told the group, which included lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Catholics from around New York and the five dioceses in New Jersey. “I am your brother, as a disciple of Jesus. I am your brother, as a sinner who finds mercy with the Lord.”

The welcoming of a group of openly gay people to Mass by a leader of Cardinal Tobin’s standing in the Roman Catholic Church in this country would have been unthinkable even five years ago. But Cardinal Tobin, whom Pope Francis appointed to Newark last year, is among a small but growing group of bishops changing how the American church relates to its gay members. They are seeking to be more inclusive and signaling to subordinate priests that they should do the same.

When the world looks like Romans 1:18-32 is in play we should not be surprised to discover that it is.

A mass (mo pun intended) hallucinatory experience caused by a lie and an orgasm does not constitute a miracle.

Jesus died for us to be forgiven of sins and not that we should embrace them instead. I have no issue with gays attending church— just dont try to justify what is unholy and unrighteous.

“He also argues that to expect a sinless lifestyle from gay Catholics, but not from any other group, is a form of “unjust discrimination” and that gay people should not be fired for marrying a same-sex spouse.”

Utter Baloney. No “group” is exempt from mortal sin. Married couples are to be chaste and faithful. Singles are expected to refrain from fornication.

And masturbation is definitely frowned upon. Don’t get me started on theft, dishonoring parents, lies and assorted and sundry sins “groups” are not exempt from.

What an hash this NYT article is.

Most homosexuals were sexually abused as children.

They seek to normalize their behavior to attain better access to YOUR children.

Promoting and embracing homosexual activity is a sin and is deviant from God’s design of the human body.

Those involved in this behavior are not eligible to participate in the Eucharist.

It’s just pro gay bias from the Times. A gay person has always been welcome to come to Mass. If they are a participant in the lifestyle, they must to to confession and repent, just as straight people do if they commit adultery, etc. I think there is a chance that they can correct their life if they go to regular Mass, as opposed to not going, so what is the down side?

That said, gay marriage doesn’t exist, and if they persist in gay sex, they are in constant mortal sin.

They were seated on folding chairs at the cathedral’s center, in front of the altar in the towering sanctuary . . .

11 and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. 12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, 13 but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. 15 “So when you see standing in the holy place ‘the abomination that causes desolation,’spoken of through the prophet Daniel—let the reader understand— 16 then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17 Let no one on the housetop go down to take anything out of the house. 18 Let no one in the field go back to get their cloak. 19 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! 20 Pray that your flight will not take place in winter or on the Sabbath. 21 For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now—and never to be equaled again. 22 “If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened. 23 At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah!’ or, ‘There he is!’ do not believe it. 24 For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Gays, like liars, thieves, adulterers, i.e. everybody, need God and His inspiration to change their ways.

If a person is gay, and striving to be chaste, they have to deal with the oppressive pressure from the “gay community” to not be chaste. While it is analogous with our current sexualized society, I would guess its worse.

The Cardinal is walking a fine line. God loves you, come to Mass, worship with the Church. However, the message should not be come to Mass with your “husband” and promote fornication.

The Times. Promoting heresy. As usual

The Church is the Body of Christ. Also the Bride of Christ. Jesus is in the Church in the form of the Eucharist.

The Church does not shift

A lot of Catholics buy this paper and believe the headline as they neglect the tent of going to Mass every Sunday where tge would get the weekly visit with Jesus as well as four reverent readings of the Bible along with reflection as they drift further into the heresy in which they dwell

If this story ended with the priest saying all these homosexual people here are recognized today for their suffering in their living in perpetual celibacy.

That is not my opinion. It is from the catechism

2358 The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible. This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial. They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided. These persons are called to fulfill God’s will in their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord’s Cross the difficulties they may encounter from their condition.

2359 Homosexual persons are called to chastity. By the virtues of self-mastery that teach them inner freedom, at times by the support of disinterested friendship, by prayer and sacramental grace, they can and should gradually and resolutely approach Christian perfection.

You cannot be a part of a religion and then tell that whole religion it has to change for YOU because you want to go on and keep sinning.

No one who identifies themselves by their sin will inherit the kingdom of God (1 Corinthians 6:9-10). But there is good news, as 1 Corinthians 6:11 says, "... Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God."

Certainly there can be nothing wrong in inviting sinners to church. Whether the Church teaches repentance for the forgiveness of sins or affirms unrepentant sinfulness in defiance of Scripture is what will make the difference. With this peculiar pope, the answer remains in doubt.
