Bishop Apologizes, Priest Resigns After Allowing Hindu Procession in Catholic Church

August 30, 2017 (LifeSiteNews) – A Spanish bishop apologized for an event in his diocese during which a Hindu deity was processed around a Catholic church and the priest who allowed it resigned from his position as Vicar General.

However, the bishop said Hindu beliefs don't need to be "rebuked" and that wasn't the point of his statement. It's unclear whether the priest, Father Juan José Mateos Castro, will remain in his position at that parish, Our Lady of Africa.

Bishop Rafael Zornoza Boy of the Diocese of Cádiz y Ceuta issued the apology, portions of which Crux translated.

A video of the procession shows people clapping and taking photos as the statue of Ganesh, the elephant-headed Hindu god, processed through the church past statues of Catholic saints toward the altar. It was even in front of the tabernacle at one point, which houses consecrated hosts that the Catholic Church teaches are the literal body, blood, soul, and divinity of Jesus Christ.

People inside the church sang a Marian hymn while looking at the Hindu statue.

Awful. Dreadful. And -— I don’t know, but -— maybe as troubling to conservative Hindus as to faithful Catholics. Honest believers are not promiscuous syncretists.

Exactly. For example, if there was a disaster and the Hindus had nowhere to have their puja, I should certainly HOPE the Catholic Church would share her facilities.

What about JPII who allowed Buddhists in the church at Assisi? He did other strange things, too, fed some snakes in Africa, let that bare chested woman read from a pulpit (granted he might not have wanted to make a scene but then maybe it was done to provoke something).

If the priest agrees not to do it again, maybe he should be forgiven although it seems like a sacrilege to me.

And Hindus are peaceful but I don't like that goddess with the 6 Arms or whatever god that was in the light show on the empire state building.

And Cardinal Mahony has done some permissive things which crossed the line.

Christians are not supposed to accommodate false gods period. We aren’t even talking about the same God, as we would be if it were Lutherans and Baptists or even Catholics and Jews. It doesn’t mean we can’t show love and compassion to others but we are supposed to share the Good News, not cheer on an idol within the sacred walls of God’s House.

It would or rather does.

This kind of thing says to the honest believers, as opposed to the social mouthers, that there is no truth in your beliefs.

At that point why bother to follow the rules and tenets of your faith? It is all just a bunch of mish-mash of bannana fana fofana good time rock and roll.

This kind of thing is at best misguided disrespect, at worse it is blasphemy of the worst kind.

I like Catholic people, but their churches and clergy are an entirely different matter.
About 12 years ago a very small local Catholic church (Church of St. Thomas) burned to the ground. The priest went around begging for room at other churches to have services until they could rebuild their own. Not one other church, Catholic or Protestant, would accommodate. The Abbott of the Buddhist temple my wife attends heard of their plight and sought them out to offer a place for them to hold Sunday services. The Catholics had Sunday mornings and the Buddhists had the afternoons. They did this for 2 years until the rebuilding was complete.

Have you done research on the Kundalini and Yoga? It is all about allowing spirits to take over and enter your body. Compare it to demonic possession in scripture and the modern hyper Charismatic movement.

Yes, I have and reject all of it even though it's popular and seemingly benign in the beginning.

I got into it with my daughter who insisted on going to yoga class after I warned her what it leads to. Then she started doing this weird exercise in my house and I told her not to ever do those in my house again.

There are Charismatics on FR, and I don't like to get into it with them but that is just one danger they introduce into the church.

I'm kind of a purist, maybe too fussy. But when you have made bad mistakes, you want to keep on the straight and narrow the best you can because so many things can take you unawares.

I like Buddhists and Hindus but my grandson got a fancy amulet of some kind (a die cut aluminum that was very pretty, don't know what it was). It was those monks in saffron robes in a park in Chicago.

I warned him against other religions, it's their gods I object to, and he bent the whatever it was in two and it ended up thrown out the car window at Mcdonald's. Maybe I should have left him alone about it.

I still have horrors about the day I worked a Ouija board with my daughter, confessed it up and down and got rid of it but it was bad enough I did it but drag my daughter into it was extra wrong. It did give us rational answers (which never turned out to be true) and left me feeling very drained. So I caution people about the occult but most pay me no heed.

Charismatics are a mixed bag, but I know the history how they got in the Catholic Church and Azuza Street. God can use them. I just figure why take the chance once you realize it can lead to bad spiritual effects and sin?

What part of “I am the Way the Truth and the Life, no one comes to the Father, except through Me,” do they not understand. Did they cut that out of the Catholic Bible? (I know they didn’t just checked Bible Gateway)

He does not need to be defrocked and excommunicated. He will have enough problems come Judgement Day.

Dragon processing during Mass in Los Angeles cathedral. Cardinal Mahony was in charge then.
