Paul Bayes, bishop of Liverpool, accuses some religious leaders of ‘colluding with a system that marginalises the poor’
A senior Church of England bishop has lambasted conservative evangelical Christians in the US for their “uncritical support” of Donald Trump, urging them to reflect on how their endorsement of the president relates to their faith.
Paul Bayes, the bishop of Liverpool, said “self-styled evangelicals” risked bringing the word evangelical into disrepute, and added there was no justification for Christians contradicting God’s teaching to protect the poor and the weak.
Bayes told the Guardian: “Some of the things that have been said by religious leaders seem to collude with a system that marginalises the poor, a system which builds walls instead of bridges, a system which says people on the margins of society should be excluded, a system which says we’re not welcoming people any more into our country.
“Whenever people say those kinds of things, they need to be able to justify that they’re saying those things as Christians, and I do not believe it’s justifiable.”
He said he regretted that “people who call themselves evangelical in the US seem to be uncritically accepting” positions taken by Trump and his allies.
“Some quite significant so-called evangelical leaders are uncritically supporting people in ways that imply they are colluding or playing down the seriousness of things which in other parts of their lives [they] would see as really important,” Bayes added.
He stressed that not all evangelicals were Trump supporters, saying there were “many, many Christians who are trying to proclaim the gospel as we’ve received it, even if that means political leaders have to be challenged”.

The modern business enterprise didn’t exist in Jesus’ Israel. Now that it does exist, we still have class warfare folks making it hard for it to hire the poor.

We have poor and weak in America already. We don’t need to import new ones.

Marginalizes the poor? - Maintains property rights.
Builds walls instead of bridges? - Maintains the rule of law and protects its citizens.
Not welcoming more people into our country is completely acceptable. A country gets to decide who enters and who does not, or it does not survive.
Part of Christian doctrine is self defense and the responsibility of the government to protect its people.

Why is it that every time I hear the one-worlders pass judgement on conservative Christians I think of the Tower of Babel? God was NOT happy with the one world system. He understands that we do better as humans in small groups who speak our own language and build our own communities....with walls if necessary.

I am not a part of the Evangelical subculture anymore, but I don’t have any bitterness or anger towards people over anything.

Christian are not contradicting God's teaching to protect the poor and weak by NOT wanting their responsibility to do so foisted off on the government.
Taking care of them is the job of the CHURCH, not the government.
Besides, when we do try to protect the weak, we are thrown in jail by the pro-abortion crowd.

I’m so sick of these liberal “Christians.” They believe that all they have to do is talk about their concern for “the poor” in order to dress their godless communism in religious clothing.

But American evangelicals deserve criticism for their unhindered embrace of Donald Trump. The man is profane, and an adulterer, and lacks self control. For these, the American believer ought to be circumspect.
His policies? Great, so far. But policies do not make a man righteous.
Agreed. They think the Bible is rubbish, except for all the parts about helping the poor. Of course, the religion least known for charity, Islam, is the one religion Leftists go out of their way to defend.
When the higher ups in a religion are bombastic buffoons who think they are better than the laity, and who constantly forgo talking up Christ so they can go all political, is it still a valid religion?
