The Story of Joseph

(Old Testament)

Genesis 39

Joseph and Potiphar’s Wife

39 Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt. Potiphar, an Egyptian who was one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guard, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him there.

2 The Lord was with Joseph so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master. 3 When his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord gave him success in everything he did, 4 Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned. 5 From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the Lord blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph. The blessing of the Lord was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field. 6 So Potiphar left everything he had in Joseph’s care; with Joseph in charge, he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate.

Now Joseph was well-built and handsome, 7 and after a while his master’s wife took notice of Joseph and said, “Come to bed with me!”

8 But he refused. “With me in charge,” he told her, “my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care. 9 No one is greater in this house than I am. My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?” 10 And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be with her.

11 One day he went into the house to attend to his duties, and none of the household servants was inside. 12 She caught him by his cloak and said, “Come to bed with me!” But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house.

13 When she saw that he had left his cloak in her hand and had run out of the house, 14 she called her household servants. “Look,” she said to them, “this Hebrew has been brought to us to make sport of us! He came in here to sleep with me, but I screamed. 15 When he heard me scream for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.”

16 She kept his cloak beside her until his master came home. 17 Then she told him this story: “That Hebrew slave you brought us came to me to make sport of me. 18 But as soon as I screamed for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.”

19 When his master heard the story his wife told him, saying, “This is how your slave treated me,” he burned with anger. 20 Joseph’s master took him and put him in prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were confined.

But while Joseph was there in the prison, 21 the Lord was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden. 22 So the warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made responsible for all that was done there. 23 The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph’s care, because the Lord was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.

(End of Scripture Passage)

Joseph faced a monolithic wall of lies and injustice that dwarfs anything I have ever had to face. He was betrayed by his Own Brothers, By Slave Traders, By His Employer, and by the Government, yet he maintained his Faith and Integrity throughout. May you be Blessed by the re-telling of this Wonderful, Redemptive Story!

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Our Father in Heaven,
Hallowed be Your Holy Name!
You Are Holy, Righteous and Just,
And Glorious in Majesty!
How we Love to Worship You,
For Your Alone Are The One True God.
Perfect in All Your Ways
Almighty and Omnipresent,
You Are The GREAT I AM,
The Rock of Ages,
The Ancient of Days.
Slow to Anger and Abounding in Tender Mercies!

As we read of the false accusations
And the totally unjust Treatment of Your Servant Joseph,
We can get so angry at the injustice that he suffered.
Yet he maintained his integrity
In spite of the temptations,
accusations, enslavement,
betrayal by his own brothers,
slander and lies!
Joseph maintains his dignity and integrity throughout his ordeal,
and Because of this You blessed him in whatever dire circumstance he found himself.
What a Wonderful example for all of us,
especially in light of current events!

May the Leaders of Our Own Beloved USA
Receive Wisdom from You
to do the Right Thing.

We Pray For The Swift and Sure Coming of Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Establish His Kingdom,
and Make All Things Right.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Lately the Media has been flooded with stories about sexual harassment in the workplace. Today's bible story shows us that this is nothing new. Joseph was not only an "employee", he was a SLAVE. Slaves, even in the present day in supposedly "modern" countries, are expected to gratify their master's (or mistress's) sexual needs. "Social Justice Warriors" make a big deal out of stories about our Founding Fathers, excoriating them for alleged dalliances with slaves, and yet extolling a culture of permissiveness that has begotten the current scandals in Hollywood, TV, News-Media, and Politics. It is hypocrisy of the highest order.

Yet, unlike aspiring movie stars, White-House Interns, Congressional Pages, Make-Up Artists, Secretaries, or Aides, Joseph said "NO". And, unlike the aforementioned people, who acquiesced to get a role in a movie, a promotion, or a raise, or just to keep their jobs, Joseph did not just lose his job over it. He was falsely accused of RAPING HIS BOSS'S WIFE AND WAS SENT TO PRISON!

Now THAT'S Integrity!

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

May the strength of God pilot us, may the wisdom of God instruct us, may the hand of God protect us, may the word of God direct us. Be always ours this day and for evermore.
(St. Patrick)

God Bless America!

This story is a great example (or "the" example) of why bad things happen to good people.

It's a Divine plotline. All those things had to happen to Joseph to put him in a certain place at certain time for a certain reason.

It all makes sense in the end. The Torah account isn't even the full story of Joseph, but indicates what there is to look foward to (the great deliverance and the family reunion of all family reunions) no matter how hopeless things might seem on the surface.

The keys of deliverance were located in Egypt, aka the house of bondage. It would be one way of explaining why the word key is in literally in the end letters of name of Joseph, "shem Yoseph Tzaphnat Pa'ane'ach".

Take that back 30 years earlier with the meaning of the name Joseph, and what Rachel said, "the Lord shall add to me ANOTHER son."

Joseph is known as Joseph "ha-Tzaddik", Joseph the Righteous. Ha-tzaddik = 209 = achar (another) = ba-ohr, in the light.

It's David who unified the tribes and it is David who is the one king one shepherd over the reunified tribes (Eze 37).

There's more to literal genealogies than people think, as two families are united by the birth of a child.

The Divine narrative has chugged along, noone the wiser..

Remember what Tootle was told over and over, but he didn't listen?

"Stay on the rails no matter what."

So Bill concocted a plan.

Joseph is like Jesus in the way he stood against the prevailing corruption of the day - a root in dry ground.

Joining in prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem and for revival in our beloved America.
