Retired pope's letter sparks speculation over what role he is playing at the Vatican during his retirement
Benedict XVI's blistering criticism of theologian Peter Hünermann in a recent letter to Msgr. Dario Vigano has opened up new questions and polemics in the German-speaking part of Catholicism concerning the role and activities of the now-retired pope.
The letter, in which Benedict declined to endorse a series of books on the theology of Pope Francis, has reignited tensions that existed between theologians and the Vatican while Joseph Ratzinger was head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (1980-2005) and then Bishop of Rome (2005-13). It has also sparked fresh speculation over exactly what role Benedict, who will turn 91 in a few weeks, is playing at the Vatican during his retirement.
In an article spectacularly entitled "The Return of the Panzer Cardinal," Joachim Frank, the chairman of the Association of German Catholic Publicists (GKP), said it was distressing that the former pope still bears grudges against a theologian of Hünermanns stature.
"One cannot help wondering quite how many inner-church conflicts over the course of the past 30 years could have been avoided if this great theologian in his cardinals and papal robes had refrained from such petty dissensions and narrow-mindedness," wrote Frank in a March 23 article that was featured on the German episcopal conference internet site katholisch.de.

Maybe, just maybe, Benedict has been right all along.
STILL.
MY.
POPE.
The Lefty Cult of Francis are the ones who chose to publish the letter, not Benedict. They solicited the letter from him and then photoshopped it and deceptively released only part of it, and when they were caught it somehow became Benedicts fault. Just an evil joke.
500 years from now scholars will be intently studying the writings of Ratzinger/Benedict. The trendy people will be just a footnote in history, representing a dead end in thought.
STILL.
MY.
POPE.

Oh how I wish he was still everybodys Pope!
I am happy to side with Benedict and against Francis.
Agreed, one thousand percent.
Joachim Frank, the chairman of the Association of German Catholic Publicists, is being disgustingly disrespectful of The Real Pope.
