Jesus wasn't married. Shouldn't his example be the ideal?

John, the beloved disciple, wasn't married either. Doesn't his example count?

Paul says flatly in 1 Cor that celibacy is the superior state.

True Jesus wasn’t married and yes we should try to be like him. Following your train of thought no one will get married.

Do we know for sure John wasn’t married?

Rome can require their priests to not be married. However, they should allow a man to marry if he desires for that is also allowed by the Scriptures.
