Priests are pleading with their bishops to end doctrinal chaos.
Worldwide confusion over marriage and the sacraments has moved 15 priests from America and Europe to sign a plea April 22 titled A Pastoral Appeal to the Bishops for an Apostolic Reaffirmation of the Gospel. The appeal is now backed by more than 80 priests and one cardinal, Raymond Burke, former prefect of the Apostolic Signatura.
In a May 3 interview, Cdl. Burke said he hopes bishops respond to the priests' appeal.
"The growing confusion and the resulting division in the Church is causing a tremendous suffering, most of all for priests," Cdl. Burke said.
Even bishops are at odds over allowing private conscience to trump Church teaching in the area of sexual morality. This confusion among the shepherds is scattering the sheep. Appealing to the bishops, the concerned priests say, "We believe much of the damage could be healed or mitigated if you were to reaffirm Christ's teachings and to correct those errors with the full authority of your apostolic office."
In particular, they ask the bishops to correct a mistaken approach that asserts, "Those who commit objectively evil acts and judge themselves subjectively free of culpability must be allowed to receive Holy Communion."
So far their appeal, like all previous interventions, has gone unanswered.
Be careful what you wish for, Fathers.
If and when Francis finally gets around to providing clarity you may not like what you hear.
