[Catholic Caucus] Irish Catholics Worried, Dismayed After Abortion Vote
The Stream ^ | May 27, 2018 | Gregory Katz

Irish Catholics attending Sunday Mass were disappointed with the result of a referendum in which voters opted to legalize abortion and think it reflects the weakening of the Church — a situation that was unthinkable in Ireland a generation ago.

There was no mention of the referendum during the sermon at St. Mary’s Pro Cathedral, but it was weighing heavily on the minds of some worshippers as they left the Mass in central Dublin.

Ireland voted by a roughly two-to-one margin Friday to end a constitutional ban on abortion, and parliament is expected to approve a more liberal set of laws governing the termination of pregnancies.

Some worshippers said the overwhelming victory of abortion rights activists seeking the repeal of the Eighth Amendment of the constitution reflects a weakening of the Catholic Church’s historic influence and fills them with dread for Ireland’s future.

It isn’t yet clear what strategy abortion opponents will use in parliament in light of the unexpectedly large vote in favor of repeal. Some opposition figures have indicated they won’t block legislation because they must respect the public will.

Absolutely disgusting!

What about the will of God to protect innocent life versus "the public will"?

This the problem in a nutshell!!!! The sermons at most Catholic masses almost never relevant to the shit going on in the world regarding the destruction of life and family. And we wonder why the culture is lost?

Exactly!

Neither before nor after the referendum, did the Catholic hierarchy, including Pope Francis, barely put up a protest against this ammendment.

Nope. The Church seems to have no clue how to mobilize the clueless pulpit to fight for the most incideous spiritual battle of our lives.

This “pope” is never vocal on life issues when it matters. Never! But global warming...oh boy look out.

The Catholics in Ireland who have been staying away from Mass in droves need to look in the mirror....what goes around, comes around.

What an ever so sanitary way of phrasing the thing abortion actually is.

EXACTLY. This huge bombshell vote happened 2 freakin' days ago. Faithful Catholics are undoubtedly angry and discouraged by the result, and Father NeverOffendTheFaithless can't be bothered to mention it from the pulpit? That right there is the problem. And it's why pro-life Catholics had to laugh bitterly at Bergoglio's comments a few years ago about how priests shouldn't be 'obsessed' with issues like abortion when we in the pews know how far from reality that is.

Some opposition figures have indicated they won’t block legislation because they must respect the public will.

And this is why the Left beats us so much. When they lose, they don't throw in the towel. When 'same sex marriage' was defeated everywhere it was on the ballot (including California) 10-15 years ago, did the Left say, "Oh, well, we must respect the public will"? Hell, no. They refused to accept the result, and kept hammering away.

Yep. Gay marriage was a 75 percent issue in OUR FAVOR only 5 years ago. So much so that Obama ran against it running for his second term!!! And no one fought it.

‘What about the will of God to protect innocent life versus “the public will”?’

why do you suppose the Deity does not exert his will to protect the most helpless among us...?

After gay "marriage" was forced on Massachusetts by the state supreme court in '03,I believe there were eleven states that quickly put the question of defining marriage as one man-one woman ONLY on the ballot for the '04 election, which a lot of people credit with getting the conservative vote out there and sparing us a president Kerry!

I think there were more “Catholics”, who don't attend Sunday Mass than there were the church-going Catholics, who do go to Mass, who voted in this referendum.

There were more practicing Irish Catholics back when the pro-life 8th amendment was passed in 1983; but back then, we had a Catholic pope.

Mass attendance in Dublin to drop by one-third by 2030

Weekly Mass attendance levels in Dublin are currently put at 20-22 per cent (of the population), while being as low as 2-3 per cent in some working-class parishes.

The World Meeting of Families will take place on August 22-26, 2018 in Dublin, Ireland. This is the first World Meeting of Families since the release of Amoris Laetitia, the 2016 apostolic exhortation by Pope Francis which is the inspiration for the theme and content of the WMOF. While not yet confirmed, the Holy Father hopes to be present at some point during the Meeting. Registration is now available through the WMOF website. . .

World Meeting of Families 2018

What "families" will be left by the end of this pontificate?

Well that, and Priests screwing all those little boys sure didn’t help in the culture wars.

No it didn’t. Funny how that didn’t seem to hurt support for public schools though. Many more cases of pedophiles in that institution.

If you put the Ten Commandments up for a vote they’d lose by a wide margin too.

You’re right on that one but the public schools are protected by Democrats. Schools have unionized which means lots of money and lots of votes. Children take second place , unless of course they can be used as poster children that must be protected to achieve another political aim.
Your church as with the public schools have been infiltrated by people with other goals that differ greatly from those of the institution so infiltrated. from the NFL to the highest levels of our government. Your church needs your own Donald Trump to drain your swamp. Instead you got this guy that from what he says I am not sure I would classify him as a Christian. “is the Pope Catholic?” Not so sure
