Pope Sends Birthday Greetings to ‘Father of Liberation Theology’
Crux ^ | 6/7/18 | Junno Arocho Esteves

ROME - Pope Francis wished a happy 90th birthday to the “father of liberation theology” and thanked him for his contributions to the Catholic Church and his love for the poor.

As Dominican Father Gustavo Gutierrez prepared to celebrate his birthday June 8, Pope Francis assured him of his “prayers in this significant moment in your life.”

“Thank you for your efforts and for your way of challenging everyone’s conscience, so that no one remains indifferent to the tragedy of poverty and exclusion,” the pope wrote.

Gutierrez, a Peruvian, is one of the principal founders of liberation theology, which rose to prominence in South America in the 1960s and 1970s as a way of responding to the needs of Latin America’s poor and as a call for freedom from unjust social structures.

In the 1990s, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, then led by the future Pope Benedict XVI, expressed concerns about some currents of liberation theology, which he said were politicized and relied on Marxist ideas and analyses. Nevertheless, he praised liberation theology’s zeal for social justice and the poor.

Pope Francis has followed his predecessor’s line, disagreeing with the movement’s politicization while sympathizing with its concern for the poor.

This pope deserves to be parachuted into N Korea or Iran.

poverty and such are indeed valid concerns...
but ‘liberation theology’ has a whole lot more communist revolutionary thought in it.. than it does Biblical theology or faith, imho

I’d have to say I dislike ‘liberation theology’ even more than I dislike communism. At least the communists usually say they are atheists in their rejection of faith.
The ‘liberation theology’ tends to pretend it is still faithful, or at least it warps Biblical faith into something false. Either way, the ‘liberation theology’ people seem to be hypocritical (as well as mostly, well, communistic)

that’s a double dose of wrong-thinking, imho

Isn’t this Pope a Liberation Theoligist himself? It’s all he talks about. I hope the Church survives him.
He might be the pied piper leading the flock over the cliff, following the Episcopal Church et al. The Orthodox Church will be the only remnant teaching as Christ taught.

Why does anyone pay attention to this jerk? A lifelong ardent Roman Catholic, I walked away and never looked back. Every parish priest should take to the pulpit and denounce him in no uncertain terms. Every priest should go on strike. No more Masses, no more confessions, no more weddings, no more funerals, no more fundraisers, no more street fairs, nothing until Dope Francis abdicates.

Given that this is never going to happen, I urge every Catholic to walk away from the church this very minute. No more masses, no more financial support.

It was the most liberating thing I’ve ever done.

I put aside all the things that man has done to the Catholic Church. The idiotic changes:

Priests must be celibate.
Indulgences are given out or sold.
Any pronouncements regarding politics.
Any interference with the way we live, if not in conformity with original thought like love and marriage.
Any change in basic beliefs.

All of that is MAN MADE OR INSPIRED.

Not to be taken seriously. I stick to the start of Catholicism, the way the Lord meant it.

Only just now? I knew he was evil from the beginning when he refused to kneel in front of the Blessed Sacrament. In the first year of his usurpation.

No, what American blacks call liberation theology (Fr Phlager, Rev Wright) is about working within society to rise from oppression. It’s not the same liberation theology as began in South America and is more anarchistic and revolutionary.
