He has a history, going back to Argentina, of saying one thing to one person and the opposite to another, of saying one thing to someone in the morning, and the opposite to a group in the afternoon.
Bottom line: he tells you what he thinks you want to hear.
He want to please people. I notice that the Jesuits in Argentina thought he was too conservative - not radical and socially engaged enough. That could have wounded him, so maybe now he's trying to please both sides.
In other words.. he’s a typical Leftist.
This will appear more clearly to anybody who studies the conduct of Modernists, which is in perfect harmony with their teachings. In their writings and addresses they seem not unfrequently to advocate doctrines which are contrary one to the other, so that one would be disposed to regard their attitude as double and doubtful.
Contradictions are par for the course.
