Not if I don’t but what the Roman church is selling. Only those that process the doctrines of the Roman Church as infallible are trapped by them

No one is subject to the pope unless they willingly put themslves into subjection to him themselves.

Any claim otherwise is a pure power grab, plain and simple.

Holding those theological beliefs, as they are meant to be held (that is, it’s not Mary worship!), doesn’t cause mortal sin, so this is departing from the topic - but that’s ok because there’s nothing more to say on that topic that hasn’t been said 3 or 4 times here.

Those beliefs are not stated directly and explicitly in Scripture, but are alluded to there, and are backed up by tradition and reason, and dozens of learned men (not just the popes who declared them) (without pure 100% agreement of course) over centuries.

Your turn: Where is Sola Scriptura stated directly and explicitly in Scripture?

Roman Catholicism asserts all of its doctrines and beliefs are found in or will not contradict Scripture and none are without the unanimous consent of the Early Church Fathers.

I will provide from a Roman Catholic source which bills itself as "the most comprehensive resource on Catholic teaching, history, and information ever gathered in all of human history" evidence that the Immaculate Conception is not found anywhere in Scripture. Nor is there unanimous consent among the Early Church Fathers on this topic.

Evidence from Scripture:

No direct or categorical and stringent proof of the dogma can be brought forward from Scripture.

The sentence against the first parents was accompanied by the Earliest Gospel ( Proto-evangelium ), which put enmity between the serpent and the woman : "and I will put enmity between thee and the woman and her seed; she (he) shall crush thy head and thou shalt lie in wait for her (his) heel" ( Genesis 3:15 ). The translation "she" of the Vulgate is interpretative; it originated after the fourth century, and cannot be defended critically.

Now, concerning the Roman Catholic claim that Revelation 12 supports Mary and the Immaculate Conception.

1A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars; 2and she was with child; and she cried out, being in labor and in pain to give birth. Rev 12:1-2 NASB

If the Roman Catholic is citing Revelation 12:1 as referring to Mary then they have to allow 12:2 as being Mary as well....unless somehow the subject of the passage changes mid-sentence.

Rev 12:2 contradicts the claim of Isaiah 66:7-8 of Mary being free from the pangs of labor....allowing for discussion the passage is about Mary to begin with.

This carries us back to Genesis 3:15 which the Roman Catholic claims to be about Mary as well.

15And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel.” Gen 3:15 NASB

It should be noted though for the reader of the thread that only the Douay Rheims renders the text to read as "she shall crush thy head". And as previously noted by the Catholic Encyclopedia Online, and ignored for some reason, "the translation "she" of the Vulgate is interpretative; it originated after the fourth century, and cannot be defended critically."

This carries us to Genesis 3:16 which explains the punishment upon the woman, and all subsequent women, that they will have pain in childbirth.

16To the woman He said, “I will greatly multiply Your pain in childbirth, In pain you will bring forth children; Yet your desire will be for your husband, And he will rule over you.” Genesis 3:16 NASB.

No exception to this punishment has been noted in Scripture.

No exception for being sinless for any created being has been noted in Scripture.

The only person Scripture notes as being sinless is Christ Jesus, the Son of the Living God. He is the only One.

ECFs who say Mary was not sinless:

brackets mine added for background

In regard to the sinlessness of Mary the older Fathers are very cautious: some of them even seem to have been in error on this matter.

[the reference to the older fathers is interesting as it indicates the belief of Mary's sinlessness was a later development]

Origen, although he ascribed to Mary high spiritual prerogatives, thought that, at the time of Christ's passion, the sword of disbelief pierced Mary's soul ; that she was struck by the poniard of doubt ; and that for her sins also Christ died ( Origen, "In Luc. hom. xvii").

In the same manner St. Basil [recognized as a Doctor in the RCC] writes in the fourth century: he sees in the sword, of which Simeon speaks, the doubt which pierced Mary's soul (Epistle 259).

St. Chrysostom [recognized as a Doctor in the RCC] accuses her of ambition, and of putting herself forward unduly when she sought to speak to Jesus at Capharnaum ( Matthew 12:46 ; Chrysostom, Hom. xliv; cf. also "In Matt.", hom. 4).

Justin Martyr: Justin Martyr didn't think Mary was sinless. He refers to every person being a sinner, and he denies that a Jewish opponent he was debating, Trypho, can cite a single person who didn't need to be saved by Christ from sins he had committed. No Roman Catholic could issue such a challenge to Trypho:

"Now, we know that he did not go to the river because He stood in need of baptism, or of the descent of the Spirit like a dove; even as He submitted to be born and to be crucified, not because He needed such things, but because of the human race, which from Adam had fallen under the power of death and the guile of the serpent, and each one of which had committed personal transgression....For the whole human race will be found to be under a curse. For it is written in the law of Moses, 'Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things that are written in the book of the law to do them.' And no one has accurately done all, nor will you venture to deny this; but some more and some less than others have observed the ordinances enjoined. But if those who are under this law appear to be under a curse for not having observed all the requirements, how much more shall all the nations appear to be under a curse who practise idolatry, who seduce youths, and commit other crimes? If, then, the Father of all wished His Christ for the whole human family to take upon Him the curses of all, knowing that, after He had been crucified and was dead, He would raise Him up, why do you argue about Him, who submitted to suffer these things according to the Father's will, as if He were accursed, and do not rather bewail yourselves? For although His Father caused Him to suffer these things in behalf of the human family, yet you did not commit the deed as in obedience to the will of God." (Dialogue with Trypho, 88, 95)

Clement of Alexandria:

"Now, O you, my children, our Instructor is like His Father God, whose son He is, sinless, blameless, and with a soul devoid of passion; God in the form of man, stainless, the minister of His Father's will, the Word who is God, who is in the Father, who is at the Father's right hand, and with the form of God is God. He is to us a spotless image; to Him we are to try with all our might to assimilate our souls. He is wholly free from human passions; wherefore also He alone is judge, because He alone is sinless. As far, however, as we can, let us try to sin as little as possible. For nothing is so urgent in the first place as deliverance from passions and disorders, and then the checking of our liability to fall into sins that have become habitual. It is best, therefore, not to sin at all in any way, which we assert to be the prerogative of God alone...But He welcomes the repentance of the sinner-loving repentance-which follows sins.

For this Word of whom we speak alone is sinless. For to sin is natural and common to all." (The Instructor, 1:2, 3:12)

There is even a Roman Catholic writing by Alexander VII that admits Roman Catholics worship Mary!

Antigua is the piety of the faithful Christians to the Blessed Virgin Mary, who feel in their soul, that in the moment of its creation and infusion in the body, was preserved free from the stain of original sin, by a singular grace and privilege of God , in view of the merits of his son Jesus Christ, the Redeemer of mankind, and that, in this respect, worship and celebrated with solemn ceremony the feast of his conception; and already grown its number, and after that Sixto IV, of happy remembrance, publish their apostolic constitutions, refurbished and sent to observe by the Council of Trent, which recommends this cult, this increased.

Was again increased and spread this devotion or worship to the mother of God after erect, with the approval of the Roman popes, monasteries of religious orders and confraternities in honor of that name, and after granted indulgences in the same sense in such a way that, when the majority of universities and the most famous among them were folded to that doctrine, almost all Catholics supported it.

Apostolic Constitution "Sollicitudo Omnium Ecclesiarum", His Holiness Alexander VII, on the Immaculate conception of the Blessed Virgin the 8 December 1661

The history of how the Immaculate Conception came about is very interesting.

It was not "universally" approved by the Roman Catholic Church as some have suggested. Alphonsus de Liguori notes, in the Glories of Mary, that 228 writers expressed a view on the IC: 92 were opposed; 136 in favor...59.6%.

[note: there were no page numbers in this version on google books]

That is not a universal acceptance of the dogma.

What pushed it over the finish line?

Whilst these disputes went on, the great universities and almost all the great orders had become so many bulwarks for the defense of the dogma. In 1497 the University of Paris decreed that henceforward no one should be admitted a member of the university, who did not swear that he would do the utmost to defend and assert the Immaculate Conception of Mary. Toulouse followed the example; in Italy, Bologna and Naples; in the German Empire, Cologne, Maine, and Vienna; in Belgium, Louvain; in England before the Reformation. Oxford and Cambridge; in Spain Salamanca, Toledo, Seville, and Valencia; in Portugal, Coimbra and Evora; in America, Mexico and Lima. The Friars Minor confirmed in 1621 the election of the Immaculate Mother as patron of the order, and bound themselves by oath to teach the mystery in public and in private. The Dominicans, however, were under special obligation to follow the doctrines of St. Thomas, and the common conclusion was that St. Thomas was opposed to the Immaculate Conception. Therefore the Dominicans asserted that the doctrine was an error against faith (John of Montesono, 1373); although they adopted the feast, they termed it persistently "Sanctificatio B.M.V." not "Conceptio", until in 1622 Gregory XV abolished the term "sanctificatio". Paul V (1617) decreed that no one should dare to teach publicly that Mary was conceived in original sin, and Gregory XV (1622) imposed absolute silence (in scriptis et sermonibus etiam privatis) upon the adversaries of the doctrine until the Holy See should define the question. To put an end to all further cavilling, Alexander VII promulgated on 8 December 1661, the famous constitution "Sollicitudo omnium Ecclesiarum", defining the true sense of the word conceptio, and forbidding all further discussion against the common and pious sentiment of the Church. He declared that the immunity of Mary from original sin in the first moment of the creation of her soul and its infusion into the body was the object of the feast (Densinger, 1100).http://www.catholic.org/encyclopedia/view.php?id=6056

Neither Paul, Luke, John, Matthew, Mark, or Peter ever wrote an exception for Mary. The New Testament is clear...all have sinned. There has only been one person who has lived a sinless life: Christ Jesus.

This is but one reason why Christianity rejects Roman Catholic Tradition as being on par with Scripture.

Your turn: Where is Sola Scriptura stated directly and explicitly in Scripture?

You mean aside from 2 Timothy 3:14-17?

14You, however, continue in the things you have learned and become convinced of, knowing from whom you have learned them, 15and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.

Your turn: Where is Sola Scriptura stated directly and explicitly in Scripture?

You will note the appeal to the written word in both the Old and New Testaments.

Word search on “it is written” from Biblegateway.com using NASB translation.

Joshua 8:31 just as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded the sons of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, an altar of uncut stones on which no man had wielded an iron tool; and they offered burnt offerings on it to the Lord, and sacrificed peace offerings.

2 Samuel 1:18 and he told them to teach the sons of Judah the song of the bow; behold, it is written in the book of Jashar.

2 Kings 23:21 [ Passover Reinstituted ] Then the king commanded all the people saying, “Celebrate the Passover to the Lord your God as it is written in this book of the covenant.”

2 Chronicles 23:18 Moreover, Jehoiada placed the offices of the house of the Lord under the authority of the Levitical priests, whom David had assigned over the house of the Lord, to offer the burnt offerings of the Lord, as it is written in the law of Moses—with rejoicing and singing according to the order of David.

2 Chronicles 25:4 However, he did not put their children to death, but did as it is written in the law in the book of Moses, which the Lord commanded, saying, “Fathers shall not be put to death for sons, nor sons be put to death for fathers, but each shall be put to death for his own sin.”

2 Chronicles 31:3 [ Reforms Continued ] He also appointed the king’s portion of his goods for the burnt offerings, namely, for the morning and evening burnt offerings, and the burnt offerings for the sabbaths and for the new moons and for the fixed festivals, as it is written in the law of the Lord.

2 Chronicles 35:12 Then they removed the burnt offerings that they might give them to the sections of the fathers’ households of the lay people to present to the Lord, as it is written in the book of Moses. They did this also with the bulls.

Sola means “only”. Which of these say we should ONLY use Scripture? To include how Scripture is used in translating to English, deciding which writings to include, interpreting parables and metaphors and hidden meanings, etc. Thanks!

Perhaps we should clear up what sola scriptura means first.

Question: "What is sola scriptura?"

Answer: The phrase sola scriptura is from the Latin: sola having the idea of “alone,” “ground,” “base,” and the word scriptura meaning “writings”—referring to the Scriptures. Sola scriptura means that Scripture alone is authoritative for the faith and practice of the Christian. The Bible is complete, authoritative, and true. “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16).

Sola scriptura was the rallying cry of the Protestant Reformation. For centuries the Roman Catholic Church had made its traditions superior in authority to the Bible. This resulted in many practices that were in fact contradictory to the Bible. Some examples are prayer to saints and/or Mary, the immaculate conception, transubstantiation, infant baptism, indulgences, and papal authority. Martin Luther, the founder of the Lutheran Church and father of the Protestant Reformation, was publicly rebuking the Catholic Church for its unbiblical teachings. The Catholic Church threatened Martin Luther with excommunication (and death) if he did not recant. Martin Luther's reply was, “Unless therefore I am convinced by the testimony of Scripture, or by the clearest reasoning, unless I am persuaded by means of the passages I have quoted, and unless they thus render my conscience bound by the Word of God, I cannot and will not retract, for it is unsafe for a Christian to speak against his conscience. Here I stand, I can do no other; may God help me! Amen!”

The primary Catholic argument against sola scriptura is that the Bible does not explicitly teach sola scriptura. Catholics argue that the Bible nowhere states that it is the only authoritative guide for faith and practice. While this is true, they fail to recognize a crucially important issue. We know that the Bible is the Word of God. The Bible declares itself to be God-breathed, inerrant, and authoritative. We also know that God does not change His mind or contradict Himself. So, while the Bible itself may not explicitly argue for sola scriptura, it most definitely does not allow for traditions that contradict its message. Sola scriptura is not as much of an argument against tradition as it is an argument against unbiblical, extra-biblical and/or anti-biblical doctrines. The only way to know for sure what God expects of us is to stay true to what we know He has revealed—the Bible. We can know, beyond the shadow of any doubt, that Scripture is true, authoritative, and reliable. The same cannot be said of tradition.

The Word of God is the only authority for the Christian faith. Traditions are valid only when they are based on Scripture and are in full agreement with Scripture. Traditions that contradict the Bible are not of God and are not a valid aspect of the Christian faith. Sola scriptura is the only way to avoid subjectivity and keep personal opinion from taking priority over the teachings of the Bible. The essence of sola scriptura is basing your spiritual life on the Bible alone and rejecting any tradition or teaching that is not in full agreement with the Bible. Second Timothy 2:15 declares, “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.”

Sola scriptura does not nullify the concept of church traditions. Rather, sola scriptura gives us a solid foundation on which to base church traditions. There are many practices, in both Catholic and Protestant churches, that are the result of traditions, not the explicit teaching of Scripture. It is good, and even necessary, for the church to have traditions. Traditions play an important role in clarifying and organizing Christian practice. At the same time, in order for these traditions to be valid, they must not be in disagreement with God’s Word. They must be based on the solid foundation of the teaching of Scripture. The problem with the Roman Catholic Church, and many other churches, is that they base traditions on traditions which are based on traditions which are based on traditions, often with the initial tradition not being in full harmony with the Scriptures. That is why Christians must always go back to sola scriptura, the authoritative Word of God, as the only solid basis for faith and practice.

On a practical matter, a frequent objection to the concept of sola scriptura is the fact that the canon of the Bible was not officially agreed upon for at least 250 years after the church was founded. Further, the Scriptures were not available to the masses for over 1500 years after the church was founded. How, then, were early Christians to use sola scriptura, when they did not even have the full Scriptures? And how were Christians who lived before the invention of the printing press supposed to base their faith and practice on Scripture alone if there was no way for them to have a complete copy of the Scriptures? This issue is further compounded by the very high rates of illiteracy throughout history. How does the concept of sola scriptura handle these issues?

The problem with this argument is that it essentially says that Scripture’s authority is based on its availability. This is not the case. Scripture’s authority is universal; because it is God’s Word, it is His authority. The fact that Scripture was not readily available, or that people could not read it, does not change the fact that Scripture is God’s Word. Further, rather than this being an argument against sola scriptura, it is actually an argument for what the church should have done, instead of what it did. The early church should have made producing copies of the Scriptures a high priority. While it was unrealistic for every Christian to possess a complete copy of the Bible, it was possible that every church could have some, most, or all of the Scriptures available to it. Early church leaders should have made studying the Scriptures their highest priority so they could accurately teach it. Even if the Scriptures could not be made available to the masses, at least church leaders could be well-trained in the Word of God. Instead of building traditions upon traditions and passing them on from generation to generation, the church should have copied the Scriptures and taught the Scriptures (2 Timothy 4:2).

Again, traditions are not the problem. Unbiblical traditions are the problem. The availability of the Scriptures throughout the centuries is not the determining factor. The Scriptures themselves are the determining factor. We now have the Scriptures readily available to us. Through the careful study of God’s Word, it is clear that many church traditions which have developed over the centuries are in fact contradictory to the Word of God. This is where sola scriptura applies. Traditions that are based on, and in agreement with, God’s Word can be maintained. Traditions that are not based on, and/or disagree with, God’s Word must be rejected. Sola scriptura points us back to what God has revealed to us in His Word. Sola scriptura ultimately points us back to the God who always speaks the truth, never contradicts Himself, and always proves Himself to be dependable.

There is more than ample evidence for Scripture being our source of truth than the Roman Catholic dogma of the Immaculate Conception.

As I posted in a prior answer to you, there is NO evidence in Scripture of the dogma and no clear position from the ECFs.

Now compare to 2 Tim 3:16-17 where we do have Paul, moved by the Spirit, to write that All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.

The Christian can clearly point to this verse for the appeal to Scripture.

The Roman Catholic cannot point to a single verse in Scripture to show the Immaculate Conception as witnessed by the Catholic Encyclopedia online.

Essentially 2 Timothy 3:16-17.

My computer is down right now and when mr. mm gets to it, I’ll be happy to post the verse so you don’t have to waste time looking it up yourself.

The reason Scripture is the sole rule of faith is by it’s very intrinsic nature as the word of God.

Since God cannot lie, it is true and infallible and by it’s very nature authoritative because GOD is authoritative.

I also see that ealgeone has provided a sufficient number of Scripture verses.

So tell me.......

What did God leave out of Scripture that we needed to know so badly that the Catholic church had to supplement it?

Your replies were very thorough, thank you. In general, IMHO, they are in accord with Catholic teaching, like it or not.

But then there are the examples you state; some we even have debated on FR before; not much more to say on them.

So, please don’t feel the need to examine each of them here.

Some have been misunderstood by Protestants, and badly mis-explained by some Catholics, over centuries.

To me, personally, the more important of those tenets to the life of a Christian and his/her salvation, the more directly Biblical they are and the better link they have to early tradition.

And holding any of all those (correctly understood) examples does not cause mortal sin - goes back to the original point.

I defer to you all for the last word...

It was a good exercise to list all of the Scriptures. I have Logos Bible Software. Last night I was able to comprise an even greater listing of verses that point to the superiority of the written word, Scripture, over any tradition.

In the NT for example, roughly 1 in 28 verses points to the OT or has a clear reference to the written word given by God to man.

That is quite a testimony from the NT as to how Scripture was viewed.

But to conclude this otherwise pleasant discussion, 2 Timothy 3:15-17 is our guide on this.

It is the verse that tells us that Scripture, and only Scripture is inspired by God, is sufficient teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.

Roman Catholic "Tradition" cannot make that claim.

By keeping their faith in God and realizing that a mere man is not the voice of God.

I believe he is pushing for schism. What he believes he will get from that dumbfounds me. I believe that a majority of priests/bishops/cardinals and the pope don’t even believe. The apostasy in Christ’s church is appallingly high.

The Lord is not pleased this I know for sure. I am searching for a TLM church in FW where we will be moving soon done with NO
