Vatican Cardinal: Allow Communion for Protestant Spouse ‘Every Time’

Cardinal Francesco Coccopalmerio has said that the German bishops’ policy, allowing for Protestant spouses of Catholics to receive Communion on a regular basis, is consistent with the laws of the Church.

Cardinal Coccopalmerio— who recently retired from his post as president of the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts, the Vatican body charged with interpretation of canon law— told Vatican Insider that the law currently allows for Protestants to receive Communion under exceptional circumstances. However, he went on to say that when a Protestant attends Mass together with a Catholic spouse, “We can honestly answer that it is an exceptional case.”

When pressed by Vatican Insider to say whether a Protestant could receive Communion routinely when attending Mass with a Catholic spouse, the cardinal answered in the affirmative.

Cardinal Coccopalmerio’s statement appeared to be a direct contradiction of a recent statement by Cardinal Gerhard Müller, the former prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Cardinal Müller had told an Australian Catholic journal that intercommunion, as envisioned in the German bishops’ policy, is “not possible.” Cardinal Müller explained that the reception of the Eucharist is an indication of shared faith, and Protestants do not share the Catholic faith in the Eucharist.

Socialists/Progressives are trying to destroy this church, AND THEY ARE SUCCEEDING!
Tradionalists like me are considering leaving. The liberal socialist bent in the church are thrilled, and they are picking up steam. The Catholic Church could be counted on to be stalwart in messy times. NO LONGER!!
This socialist pope(put in place by underhanded means) is the enemy of my church!!

I have a Catholic spouse and have been going to Mass in the US for twenty two years.

As far as I can tell, this is a done deal and has been for many years.

Here’s a way to tell. Just call up random Catholic churches and ask them. You are a wealthy Protestant spouse of a Catholic unwilling to become Catholic but willing to give generously to the parish if you can receive Communion. You are looking for a new parish and are discreet. And see what they say.

TBH I don’t think this has anything to do with money.

Right, you are just trying to make it easy for someone to tell you ‘sure’, that this is fine and normal over the phone as a way to judge how common it really is. They are probably more likely to do that if there are other tangential benefits.

If you call up 100 and no one says ‘sure’ then I would say that at least you know that they don’t talk about this to strangers over the phone. So it can’t be casually common or approved to the point they won’t tell rich strangers about it over the phone.

Why?

And why would the spouse want to do so?

I really don't get this idea of going to a place of worship and engaging in their rituals while at the same time not believing in them.

It is an insult to that religion and your own.

'Taint polite.

I wonder how many mixed Protestant/Catholic marriages in 2018 Germany really care about any of it enough to want to do it in the first place. I suspect any that would bother are probably in their 70s. You have to care enough about it to bother to engage in something that both faiths would generally be against in good faith, but still do it anyway?

A point.

It just seems so odd to me.

Now if you are in the process of converting maybe I could see it but not under other conditions.

Bingo, someone here gets it. This is all about attracting as many people as possible to come and fill the collection baskets.

By the way, it's not only Catholic Churches who are guilty of this. I personally know of the case of a large, popular Evangelical church in this area which married a couple I am acquainted with. Both had been cheating on their prior spouses with each other for many years. This is the woman's 4th. marriage. Both are professionally successful, and capable of writing very big checks to a church.
