Archbishop of Syktyvkar Says Russian Church Ready to Begin Dialogue on Return of Monarchy in Russia

The Russian Orthodox Church is prepared to begin a dialogue with Russian authorities and society on the return of the institution of the monarchy, one hierarch recently stated.

That the Church could enter into a dialogue on the return of the only true form of government, according to Biblical teaching, was stated by His Eminence Archbishop Pitirim of Syktyvkar and Komi-Ziryansky on the television program “Fireside Chats” on the eve of the 100th anniversary of the martyrdom of Tsar Nicholas II and his family, reports Nevsky News.

Abp. Pitirim explained:

The Bible specifies two systems: theocracy and monarchy, which is inferior to theocracy. The democratic system is even more inferior, and moreso all the other systems we choose in our times. The Church is ready to enter into a dialogue on the monarchy. A monarchy has been preserved in many countries, so why is Russia less worthy of having a monarch like, for instance, the Queen of England? It’s an elevation of status, so what, is Russia not worthy of this status? The Church is ready for this ideology,

At the same time, he noted that such a dialogue could last for years or even decades. Speaking of the institution of monarchy, he especially highlighted the high moral level of especially the last Royal Family. Besides that the crown-bearers were deeply believing people, they also bore love for the Russian people. The heirs were raised in strictness, loved simple food, and were accustomed to work—the boys in military affairs, and the girls in nursing care for the ill and wounded, the archbishop explained.

Speaking on the television program “The Church and the World” last summer, His Eminence Metropolitan Hilarion (Alfeyev) of Volokolamsk also noted the advantages of monarchy and the Church’s readiness to join a dialogue on the......

Why would the Russian public allow a monarchy to return?

I understand nostalgia and such, but this is a profoundly bad idea.

One could argue that Russia never really abandoned the monarchy. They simply dressed it up in red flags.

Monarchies were created for Christian countries by God after the fall of Rome. because Christendom was under the control of Popes and not ready for true Christian theocracy.

But all nations should strive for Christian theocracy. There is no reason why a country has to have a king first. Russia should move straight into theocracy under the leadership of Vladimir Putin, who is a true Christian warrior.

We could do the same here, as we also have a Christian warrior as head of state.

Yep. Not much to distinguish Stalin from Ivan the Terrible. Why they would ever consider returning to that is beyond me

Interesting... but would the Russian people support amending the Russian Constitution to change from a republic to a constitutional monarchy? Is the support of the ROC enough to sway them?

Also, even if they would support such a change, who takes the throne? One of the Romanov claimants (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Line_of_succession_to_the_former_Russian_throne) or someone else?

I guess all I can say is “good luck?”

If they ban abortion first, I might buy it. I’m not holding my breath, but if there was any country that had both security reasons and spiritual reasons to do it, it would be Russia. They have a huge demographic hole, and have had the highest abortion rate ever in the 90s.

I don’t think they’re contemplating return to that “Autocrat of all the Russias ” stuff.

Thanks, but no thanks.

If Europe's history tells us anything, monarchy or theocracy that enforces any particular denominational creed tends to end badly even for the Christian groups that don't "measure up" because "heretics" are a threat to social order.

I would only want to see Catholicism as the guiding interpretation of such a theocracy or monarchy (and an orthodox expression of it at that). I would expect other Christians to want the same -- a theocracy/monarchy that reflects their own denominational beliefs. With Trump, the best that could be hoped for is a guiding creed that is "non-sectarian" (but is really, by definition, generically Protestant). It's a recipe for a gradual return to secular rule at best or open persecution at worst.

Again, thanks, but no thanks.

the only true form of government, according to Biblical teaching

God's desire was for Israel to accept Him as their king, not a human ruler.

I suspect the Orthodox Church wants a tight ruler so they can use him to create a state church, and outlaw all other denominations.

What scares this American, whether they intend to go there or not is, one bad apple and there they are.

I like the checks and balances idea. Hard to have that in a monarchy.

That’s a steaming pantload. The Bible does not teach monarchy as the only true form of government. And after Thomas Paine and “Common Sense”, anyone advocating monarchy should be laughed out of the public square.

If it isn’t Jesus on the throne, a monarch should expect to be overthrown at any moment.

“But all nations should strive for Christian theocracy. “

Stupidest thing I have heard today. A pope by any other name. I’ll take America as a constitutional republic any day.

Why are these humans you trust to have absolute temporal power over your life?

The Russian Tsars were, with barely an exception, rotten, rotten autocrats. They created the forebearers of the gulags, of the KGB/NKVD and were horrific to their own people.

Also, by the time of Nicholas II (the last Tsar) they were purely German by blood (in fact Tsar Alexander I in 1810 was already purely German (father, grandfather, great grandfather had married Germans)

That is old information. The demographic pit was reached in the 90s. Since then they are now at the replacement rate

Not much to distinguish Stalin from Ivan the Terrible.

Ivan the Terrible didn't deliberately starve to death 9 million Ukrainians. Ivan didn't send out NKVD agents to a district with a quota of people they had to arrest and execute for "spying". Ivan didn't murder several thousand Polish officers and nobles and then lie about it for decades. Ivan the Terrible, as far as I know, did not have a secret police head who was a rapist and a serial murderer of teenage girls who refused his attentions. (And Stalin knew about what Beria did, and did nothing. The bones of some of Beria's victims have been dug up at the Tunisian embassy in Moscow, which was Beria's house.)

I can go on.

The worst thing Ivan did, in terms of mass murder, was probablky the massacre of Novgorod. Some historians think the actual death toll from that may have been as low as 3,000. Three thousand corpses was a nice week's work for Stalin's NKVD. A day's work at some points.

I could be persuaded to be an anarchist-monarchist myself.

One ceremonial family, with no desire or incentive to interfere in your daily life.

Good reason, eh?

We were lucky enough to spend a few hours with Grand Duchess Maria, she was delightful. I hope it pleases God to restore her line.

Unfortunately, I don’t see this going anywhere for now. Putin is not likely to want anyone in even a ceremonial role that might hold enough moral authority to pose a threat to his rule.

I guess I don’t understand. Aren’t they now missing a lot of 20-30 year old people that should be having babies now? I thought that was the pit, when the people aborted would have been most likely to reproduce?
