Maine went for Obama by 15 points. Hillary won it by just 3. It’s going Red in 2020. Unfortunately, because the EV are awarded by district, it’s only a 2 vote gain.
I kind of like the Maine/Nebraska system—and having a couple of states doing different things at least is an occasion for people to think.
I don’t disagree. Look at Minnesota. It’s a typically blue state. But if you broke our state’s 10 electoral votes down in the same way Maine does, here’s how 2016 would have come out:
Trump: 1st CD, 2nd CD, 6th CD, 7th CD, 8th CD = 5 electoral votes
Clinton: 3rd CD, 4th CD, 5th CD = 3 electoral votes
Clinton won the statewide vote narrowly so that = 2 more electoral votes
Final Electoral Vote Total:
Trump 5 EV’s
Clinton: 5 EV’s
