Can a Pope Be Removed from Office?
Canon Law Made Easy ^ | January 31, 2013 | canonlawmadeeasy

Q: In a recent piece you explained the Pope can resign if he chooses. To me that raises another question: What would happen if a Pope became so mentally debilitated that he didn't know what he was doing?

This is a very interesting article. The conclusion of the article is "there is nobody on earth who has the authority to make an official determination that the Pope is incapacitated and must be removed, or that somebody else should henceforth govern in his place."

Dead or alive? History shows both in past. I have no problem with the church fixing the problem either way.

But that's the thrust of the article....there is nothing the Roman Catholic church can do to remove the current pope. Nothing.

I have never heard that question asked before just now.
It shows you how upset many are about The Pontiff’s “No Comment” status on the aiding and abetting of child abuse charges. Usually, Pope Francis cannot keep quiet, and inserts himself in all manner of pedestrian and sundry issues.

For the record...I am not a Roman Catholic.

You say you've never heard the question asked before if a pope can be removed......I suggest you spend some time perusing the religion threads posted by Roman Catholics....they're ready to lynch the guy.

I was merely curious if a pope could "legally" be removed in Roman Catholicism.

However, the Pope is not immune to RICO laws.

In centuries past, popes were removed with daggers and poison.

I haven't ruled that out as a possibility.

True...but per the article he would still be the pope.

He governs by the consent of the Catholic people I presume. If they decide to not listen to him and start listening to someone else; that would be the equivalent of removing him.

It would be better if he stepped down though. He has been the worst Pope in my lifetime.

Not really.

And the Roman Catholic has to listen to the pope and do what he says per Unam Sanctam.

Wrong.

Did you read the article? It's written by a Roman Catholic canon lawyer.

Really? LOL

Do you really think the last pope abdicated because of ill health?

Do you really think Pope John Paul 1 died of natural causes?

Do you really think the predictions in the letters of Fatima were about Russia and not about the corruption in the church?

If you read the article, which is written by a Roman Catholic Canon lawyer, who concludes there is nothing, per Canon Law, that can be done to remove the pope. Her words....not mine.

Maybe through assassination....but not Roman Catholic Canon law.
